To the guy at the gun range:

I apologize for asking to borrow your screwdriver. If I had known that you "dont loan your equipment to anybody," I would have never asked and obviously put you out so much. Had I known I was going to have a scope mount problem, I would have brought my own screwdriver in. I wasnt concerned about all of your "equipment" spread on on the bench that we had paid for, as we were only using one of the two we paid for. That is, until I realized that it fell under the category of "my equipment."

You sure did make an impression on my 8 year old son on his second trip to the gun range. Had the guy on the other side of me not immediately offered his screwdriver after he heard your response, my son might think all people who enjoy shooting sports are like you. By the way, he also asked if I would like to shoot his BRAND NEW Savage .308, to which I declined, as I was a little shy about other peoples "equipment" at this point.

I hope you grouped your shots like you wanted today, we sure did thanks to the borrowed screwdriver. I was really proud of my son and his .223 groupings.

Good luck, I hope someday you are in need of some simple "equipment" and left empty handed.

Sorry to hear about your experience, I don't think I have ever been at the range and found some one that rude. In fact most people seem almost eager to help you out. Maybe that guy will need help sometime and won't get it but that probably wouldn't matter to him.

I have never had an experience remotely like that before at the gun range. Like you said, most people go out of the way to help.

When I was a kid, we were out as a family on the boat watersking when my dad stopped to help a stalled boat. I moaned and complained as we towed the guy back to the marina. He told me that one day, I would be that guy, and what comes around goes around. Well, you know the rest of the story, it did happen and someone was there for me.

It is a shame that he chose to act like such a jerk with my son present, but he too learned that some people are just not nice and only care about themselves.

That is really shows what kind of people there are out there, I have helped many people out of a tight spot, and it has happend to me several times too. People usualy ask what they owe you after you help them out, and my response is always remember me when the tables are turned.

What RC said +1...it's called "paying it forward" to lend a hand.
Sometimes I am just so unaware I apologize to people in need for not noticing and would really rather do what they need myself if at all possible.
BTDT on both sides of that deal

Was at the gas station yesterday in Denison when I noticed a couple guys trying to figure out a map. the guy with the map's wife was yelling at him to leave. So I started my gas pump and went over to see what was going on. These two refugee kids from a piercing parlor were from Oklahoma City and so lost they were scared ...in broad daylight. It didn't bother me they each had about 10 piercings showing but they were spooked at talking to a over 60 white bread dude like me. I laughed when I heard them tell me how they planned to get home...and set 'em straight to save about an hour's drive time. Hope they made it as the smell of "oregano" was making my eyes burn standing downwind under the gas stations overhead

thats ridiculous. i happend to have the same situation, trying to get a quick sight in, left my shooting bag at home, and low and behold i had a mount problem. guy next to me was shooting a 3000 dollar benchrest gun in 6ppc. i figured he might be able to help. i asked him if he had a screwdriver, he said yes, let me borrow it and stood there making sure i got every thing i needed. after i was done, he let me shoot that 20 pound rig. at first i declined but it was just to interesting. let me tell you, you haven't felt smooth until you shoot something with a 4 ounce trigger

I'm sorry about that incident bigjohn, more so that your son was around. Can you imagine hunting with an a-hole like this??? Sad deal but some people are wound so tight, there rear ends leak 90 weight gear fluid. Don't give up on all shooters bigjohn, or hunters at that. There are a few good people out there, this wasn't one of them.

Thanks for all of the reinforcement - the guy was a jerk, plain and simple. Standing there with my son, I must have looked like a deer in the headlights I was so surprised by his response. In my experience, shooters and hunters are some of the most resourceful, helpful and willing people you could ever meet - I guess we all have a "do it yourself" attitude.

Bigjohn - sorry to hear about your run in with the A-Hole. He's probably a guy that doesn't do anything with his guns but take them to the range. Hopefully your son understands that not everyone is like that guy.

When my Dad and I would encounter someone like that, he would always say "Don't worry son. He's a Yankee". For a long time, I didn't know what a Yankee was but I was sure glad I wasn't one.

What a pr!ck. Sorry you and your son had to weather that sh!t storm.

I was at the range sighting in my 220 Swift. I had a 6.5-20 scope on the gun and figured I'd use it for a spotting scope. Apparently another guy at the range thought otherwise. Without even asking my name he gave me his Swarovski spotting scope to use since he was on the skeet range and did not need it. That darn SS cost 2x more than my rifle/scope/bipod combo. Needless to say I took great care of it.

Sorry John, I didnt know that was you...I just got a big wiff of the rankest smell ever and had to say no. God only knows where you have been, smelling that bad. I didnt want my screwdriver to smell like that for ever. Next time I smell you, I will let you borrow whatever it is you need. In the meantime, find a skunk, you will smell much better, that way I can tolerate you
