This may sound strange to some but I am curious on how to hunt or trap and eat water nutria. I have seen a few of them up in the swamps were I go white bass fishing during the spring and was wandering if any one has any experience in hunting them or trapping them. I would like to know what time of the year is best for hunting and cooking and how to go about both.
I caint spel so good. Git off mi bak

Done a whole lot of trapping them and I used 220 Conibears in their well-worn trails between two water impoundments or foot-hold traps close to their feed beds.
They are 100% herbivores, so the only bad part is field-dressing because the intestinal tract is green with digested vegetation. Other than that, they BBQ really good and are very close to bobcat and a whole lot better than raccoon.
You can hunt them year-round with a valid hunting license, but if you plan on selling the hide or any other part of it, you will require a trapper's license.
Good luck

I like to cook them in a big roasting pan. First, stuff them with sweet potatos, baby carrots, garlic, rosemary, and a big cow turd. Seems the cow turd takes some of the bite out of the rat meat.

Nutria is great to eat, I used to kill a bunch of them in Louisiana. We would ride around in the boat and shoot them in the spotlight, or during the daytime on the levee.

We've had a couple at out pond. One got a hold of my lab trying to protect it babies. Seem like they would be pretty easy to hunt, but i don't think i would eat them. Their odor is horrible.

Hey, my advice was useful! I am of the opinion that I'd rather dine on bovine excrement than anything with the word "rat" in it's name. Fried bats is about as adventurous as I care to get.

a head shot with a .22 dispatches them in short order. I've killed several at night using a light, but never cooked them. I'm sure if you google it, something will come up.

Is that anything like clubbing baby seals? Definitely so and the media or any PETA/Animal Activist saw or read about it, plus it IS animal cruelty. It amazes me what some will put on an open forum and WE are trying like heck to keep our priviledge to hunt alive. Makes you wonder about some people.

PETA should grow a pair. these things are a pest and an invasive species. besides that theyre ugly as sin, smell bad and dig holes in dams. when PETA starts paying for tank dams ill stop shooting nutria
