I got my old canoe down form Illinois. Heck, it's vintage now,1970 17' square stern, grumman. It was great for back water and pond hunts. Can fowl hunting be had without going to the coast. I'm in SA and like to keep close to home. Also have my 9.9, I just don't know best how to use it down here .Most lakes in southern Ill have a motor size limit of 9.9.Only on larger lakes & rivers could you run biger motors.Any ideas? I would be great to water fowl hunt again.Though I'm not apposed to field hunting & pond jumping .

i have two water crafts... a 12 ft canoe, and a 14 ft flatbottom with a 6 horse. I do just fine.
I dont know the SA area very well, but around here i stick to the rivers/flooded timber with the canoe, and take the boat into coves and back waters. A 9.9 will get you around pretty well, just be carefull and watch the weather.
I like spoonie, his humor is dryer than my duck lease.

Sniper John I am sure will chime in but I know for a fact that man has made a few widows out of hens out of his canoe....
"Can you eat that?"

The TPWD magazine had an article last month, or the month before that on duck hunting out of a kayak. I know kayaks and canoes handle much differently, but might still give a point of reference. Very positive article.

I hunt with a kayak alot, mostly to get me into the backwaters, it is a lot of fun, +1 on watching the weather, you don't want to be on big water when its windy.

I hunt out of a 10ft sneak boat and my knuckle-head buddy hunts with a kayak. Sure beats walking in with all your stuff
the thing about baiting is, even a rookie hunter could have a 170 bird season if they bait holes

Very positive article. I bought that issue, it is a Native Watercraft Ultimate Check out the video. http://www.nativewatercraft.com/jimbo/4-07.cfmI think if I were to get a yak, it would be this model. The other yak I'd consider is only 22lbs. http://tdbco.com/poke_boat.htm

Wow those poke boats are light. I didn't hunt from my kayak last year, I will at least a couple times this year but I have one of those 70 pound models that don't hold extra people or dogs, not nearly as versatile as the Natives.
I have a buddy who guides striper @ Texoma and swears by the Natives, it looks like you could put your decoys in front of you and drop the first dozen, slide forward and get the rest or your blind material or whatever without ever leaving the boat if necessary.

dcoop - make sure if you put any type of motor on it (gas, electric, etc.) you will need to get it registered with TX numbers and a sticker to be legal. Don't want ya out there and get a citation.
