I don't have a lot of experience with 1911's (I've owned 2, and I liked both). I'm thinking about purchasing another for use as a cold weather carry piece / nightstand gun. I don't want to go with an ultra compact, but I don't want a full size. What is a good mid-level (<$1,000) Commander model? I've seen the Kimbers, seen the Dan Wessons, but never played with one...

I have a Colt and love it! Havent shot it in maybe 10 years though! It use to be the only gun I carried untill I bought a Glock! Its hard for me to go back to 1911's after carrying a Glock for so long!

My vote goes to the Kimber Pro Carry II. I have 2 Kimbers, a Stainless Target II and a Stainless Ultra Carry. My son has a Stainless Pro Carry II and my brother in law has a Stainless Pro Carry II. We are all completely happy with them and wouldn't trade for anything else.

pick one: Springfield: 4" LW Compact 4" Champion or 3.5" ultra Compact. All three I have are faithful trust worthy protectors. By the bed though i keep this: SHane

I'll take the Champion. Swing by and leave it in the mailbox if I'm not here...

I changed from my Colt 1991A1 Combat Commander to a Glock 36. I wanted to stick with the 45ACP but don't miss the Colt one bit.

I too have a full size 1911, but carry a Kimber Pro-carry II The pistol is accurate, and is an easy carry weapon. I carry mine in a Don Hume IWB holster, and it conceals easily under an un-tucked T-shirt or under a short jacket in cooler weather with shirt tucked in. I use the full size in my door pocket in my Trooper while driving down the hyway, stoked full of full patch bullets to punch through car doors in a raod rage sittuation, but carry the pro-carry II full of Hornady 230 gr TAP FPD ammo. Mine is the black model, not stainless. I don't like shiney pistols for self defense!
