Anyone ever used one of the hand crank meat grinders? Are they worth the trouble? I would only use it for a couple deer a year and maybe a hog. If they are usable I would rather get one of those than spend the money for an electric one.

We still have and use ones that my Great Great Grand father bought and one time we tried to figure up the number of pounds that they had ground over the years and it get mind boggling.

Just get a medium sized one and One of the best things I use them for is makeing "chopped" beef by grinding a cooked brisket through them.

I use a hand crank exclusively and have for years with my dad and now myself for the last few years. They are worth the money I processed 4 deer with a friend and we cut em up, ground up about 70% of each one and vacuum sealed it all in about 5.5 hrs. I would highly recommend it.

Find one that is a number 32, one of the most common sizes and blades and plates are readily available.

Maybe I'm just lazy... but the extra $50 bucks I spent on a electric grinder vs manaul has paid off in many many saved man hours and ibuprofan. Jusy my opinion.

If you have a kitchenaid stand mixer, buy the grinder attachment. 40 bucks well spent.

I bought the grinder attachment for my kitchenaid 7 years ago. i had just bought the wife the kitchenaid. i used the grinder to grind up a pair of shoulders from a deer. No joke, burned up the mixer within 10 minutes. it's not made to grind a lot of meat. luckily, sears exchanged the mixer for me.

now, as far as the hand crank mixers go. here's what i did. I'll try to post pics later.
i bought the #32 mixer on ebay. I think that's the #. it's HUGE. it came with the belt pulley wheel to put on it. it was 35$ shipped. then, i also bought a 1 hp electric 120 volt motor on ebay for around 35$ shipped ( really good deal ) then i went to tractor suypply, bought 2 greasable bearings, a couple more pulleys, and basically reduced the motor from spinning at 1700 rpm's to around 70 rpm's. i mounted it all up on a board and for around 110$ i have a BADASS meat grinder. i'm serious, i've ground 2 deer that i had pre-cubed (entire deer) within 10 minutes. this thing is a grinding SOB.

Wow.. sounds like a smoking setup. Can we come by your place to process opening weekend? LOL...

ok, i found the place i went to with instructions on how I built my grinder.
I stumbled across this site GRINDER INSTRCUTIONS while looking for sausage recipes.

My grinder looks EXACTLY like the one in the picture, same base, same greasible bearings, etc, except my grinder itself is MUCH larger.
i even copied how he made the base out of wood.

i'm serious, this thing cannot be beat. my buddy has a 2000$ industrial grinder, and mine puts his to shame. it's MUCH faster, and never bogs down.

you just have to keep small kids away from it, and remember not to wear loose clothing... smile

Several years ago, my wife bought me a meatgrinder on Ebay. She paid $119.00 for it and it has processed many deer. The thing to watch on electric ginders is either horsepower or watts. It the grinder is listed in watts, make sure you buy one that is at least 1,200 watts.

Mine works so well, my brother has borrowed it and once my brother in law saw it working, he asked to borrow it. It's processed lots and lots of deer.

Be kind with your words, thankful to your Creator and generous with the meat from your hunt.

For a couple of deer a year I would stick with the #32 hand crank. I process 4 or 5 every year and mine works fine. I usually do about 16 - 20 lbs of meat at a time. Just make sure that you know how to properly clean it. When I do 16 lbs the set up and cleaning take as long or longer than the actual grinding.

1 horsepower = 748 watts

You should be able to find a stuffing tube from LEM.

Hand grinders work well but the 2hp Hobart I use that is probally older than I am still works great

The #32 are kind of the industry standard, if you look around you can find them with brass bearings/bushings. And the handle end can be fitted with a pulley if you decide to motorize it. Pulleys are not cheap, so it is best to find used ones, look at flea markets etc. for used swamp/evaporative coolers, big pulley, decent motor and you are in business.
