Is it too early to start rattleing in bow season? When is the ideal time to use horns?

It is too early. You might get some response form smaller bucks. You don't want to educate the deer too early in the season. The best time is pre-rut/rut.

Thanks Mark. We have a place near the pan handle (Cottle Co.)Last year, I killed a nice buck (150") opening day of rifle. He was on the chase for does for sure. It has got a lot cooler this year (sept) then last. Safe to say the rut might start a bit earlier as well?

Most Biologists will tell you that the weather doesn't have the effect on the rut that they once thought. But MarkE is right. Definately don't rattle any horns right now unless you are looking for Bambi!!

Spoke with a S Texas biologist who expects an earlier rut down there this year for 2 reasons.

1. Poor fawn recruitment this year due to varmits
2. Excellent health with the current doe herd due recent rains (7" in last 2 weeks)

Last year's rut was late due to drought/poor health of herd.

Just what he told me FYI...

Wes

Forgot to add another reason why the poor fawn recruitment lends itself to earlier ruts. Apparantly tending/nursing fawns drives a later rut.....

It depends on when the rut happens in your area. Around here in central Texas and at my place on the coast it usually starts in mid October. So yes it can be effective during bow season depending on where you are hunting.

I've had pretty good luck with 'tinkling" the horns during October in Concho Cty. I use a rattling bag during bow season and just make sparring sounds. Seems to draw does and bucks. Admittedly I've never had a huge buck come in.

I am with you brownwood I have heard that before any fighting actually begins, you can tickle the horns. Its said that bucks do this to kinda feel each other out and get ready for the real fight

well if you would ask a fellow trophy hunter Brandon West he has the best method on pre-rut whitetails. and if you don't beleive him than just ask SSSSShane.

A good rule of thumb that I use is when I start to see all of the brush torn up it's time to beat the bones! I'm not talking about a few rubs here and there when they shed velvet, but when they start to get aggressive and start a fight with every other bush or tree they pass by.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
