I found THF a few months ago while researching my fall out of Texas deer hunt with my son. I will typically see more deer in a week of hunting in Texas than I will all season down here.
I've been on THF ever since....sure wish we had a forum like this down here in Florida.

I've been enjoying everyone's pics of your teal hunts, so I thought I'd share one of my own. Our early season is only five days, and we can shoot four ducks total (teal and wood ducks), only two of which may be woodies. I can assure you that the teal are not down here in force, as we only saw one small flock all weekend. We did hunt woodies, but not pass shooting like most people do. We put out a few decoys and a mojo teal and they came right to us. I sure wish we had the longer early season like Texas does.

I wish they would open up wood ducks during our teal season. You guys in the southeast and up in the Midwest are lucky.

Nice woodies. Did you see any gators? I hunted ducks one time in Florida, and I saw a ton of gators. I was real picky on my shots!

My hunting buddy lost his two woodies. They both were dead and not crippled, so we either assume gators or turtles. This area is loaded with gators. During the spring and summer, we did some frog gigging and the lakes would light up with gator eyes.

During regular season, what types of ducks are in Texas? I know it's a huge state, so I would assume that there are big fluctuations in the types of birds based on the area. I'm in North Florida and we get some woodies, lots of ringnecks, way too many mergansers (it's bad when you can't wrap something in bacon and make it edible), and a few others mixed in. If you're hunting divers with decoys, the majority of your bag will be ringnecks, though.

Yeah, the short list is what we DON'T have, which is basically sea ducks. We get pretty much everything else.

Dinner tomorrow night. Hen wood duck. We fileted the breasts and will rub them down in dijon mustard, worchestershire sauce, fresh ground black pepper, then wrap in bacon.....grill on low heat until medium rare....doesn't get any better than that.

Hate to break it to you, but that is a hen wood duck for sure. Notice the crest on her head. Female wood ducks are the only female puddle ducks with crested heads. Also, the white around the eye along with a drooped bill (also edged in white) is a pretty good giveaway. I think the picture is just playin' some tricks on you...

That sure was a long cast to get them all the way from Florida. Now that you have them, have fun reeling them in.

Not sure what all the hullabaloo is about. That is a damn nice pair of woodies. He knows his regs and I am jealous that he whacked those and we can't. I am not jealous however of the gator situation.

How many black ducks will you shoot this year?

I think you must be referring to the Florida Mottled Duck. I had not heard that term here, so I looked on Wikipedia and it looked and sounded like the mottled. Those are much more prominent in central and south Florida. My son and I actually fed some of them fish food at the pond in front of the Bass Pro in Orlando. We don't have too many of them up here in North Florida. During regular season, we can shoot six birds per person, with a typical bag on the local lakes will consist of ringnecks and maybe a blue bill, teal, or woodie mixed in along the way. Every now and then someone will kill a pintail, mallard, or shoveler, but the majority of the killing is on the ringnecks. I've got a wood duck hole that we hunt that is fairly consistent, but the woodies seem to get scarce when the mergansers start coming in.
