I'm considering the purchase of two or three mojo's to help bring in those lonesome doves that have slowed to a trickle. However, I have heard that the mojo's don't really help in bringing in those migrating dove from up north in the last few weeks of the season. Is this true? Also, when can I expect to see the northern dove hit Collin County, and will I need to change my hunting tactics? I usually hunt near two stock tanks at the first of the season.

They say it works, but I have never needed them. There should be more birds down with this front and in a couple of weeks.

LSU, don't think you should get one, you may try to eat it!

If the birds that see the mojo are wanting to feed in your area then it will probably work on them. If the birds are just plain migrating, then it will not work good unless you have an armada of mojo's. I had this happen to me a couple weeks ago out west. There was a migration (groups of 10 to 20 and up to 60 flying south and fast for about 45 minutes straight) coming through and group after group would fly a mile high and only glance at it if they were directly overhead. I wasn't hunting a food source though. It was funny to see a pair of dove literally cup their wings and dive bomb it. But those were few and far between and only happened right at end of shooting time when they should be at roost. What kind of food source are you hunting? I have yet to see water produce doves this year except the usual quick flight right at sundown because it has rained so much over north Texas.

TxDuck- I'm hunting an open field with little if any food source near a stock tank. Just a few sunflowers and some other plant that the dove (and other birds) have been foraging on. Wed. evening of last week we saw a number of birds fying high, but we weren't using decoys. I was curious if anyone thought having some mojos would bring them down. Opening day was pretty good for us, particularly from 7-8 AM, but we were set up in a threshed corn field across the road from a half-full stock tank. I watched a couple of friends and their sons reach their limits in no-time while sitting in front of a couple mojos. There were so many birds that they were having trouble picking their shots.

A lot of the northern dove just came thru on Sat with the front, nailed them on Sat. Sun was a little harder with temp in the lower 60's. Always use your mojo or whatever, it works. One is good enough. I only hunt out west, that is 3 hours west of dallas, dont fall for the close dove hunts, season leases. Get a good hunt 2-3 times a year on a day lease and you will never do that season leasee again.
I always look for hony holes on the THF and South of Cisco was it for me. I usaully hunt in Stamford but with the dry spell, I saw the ad for South of Cisco and Bam. Use your dove decoys it works, but you have to have dove in the area. daaaa.;..

I have hunted about every day this season and have shot near limites or limits every shoot. the last 3 hunts went 10, 6 and 2 , went out today and got zero shots. Scouted 7 other fields and all had zero birds????? No northern birds in my area yet, Graford to Strawn area.

That's correct. Most of these season passes shoot up
the doves in the first 10 days. We kept our hunts in
check and still have birds. So far--63 limits on 63
hunters.

I went out Saturday afternoon, about an hour north of Dallas. Saw plenty of birds, only got four, should of had a lot more, missed some, also had both my kids with me, I call them my little scare crows. So I went out Sunday morning, by myself for the first time all year, same spot, ready to get a bunch, and saw very few, all out of range, did not even fire my gun. Interesting, what I did see were big groups of dove, all out of range. Maybe all the ones I saw on Saturday all went south that night, don’t know.

Another cool front is moving in on Thursday, maybe they will push some birds down. I’m on the DF Farm season lease, but I may go for a day lease out west this weekend if there are a lot of birds there.

At this time of the year when the birds are migratory for the most part, they will only go to specific fields. You can have 3 great looking fields within 2 to 10 miles of each other, but only one will have birds on it. They just seem to know what they want. That is what I found when I did the season lease out west near Stamford/Anson. And then when everyone knows about it, it will get shot out in a day and they will move on.

Most of my resident whitewings in my backyard have moved on. They aren't here anymore.

I'm still seeing quite a few dove here in McKinney, but the numbers have really dropped off over the last week or two. I hunt the northeast corner of Collin County early in the season, but that area is starting to dry up. About what could I expect to pay for a day lease within an hour or so from DFW? Any suggestions?

I don't think you will find a productive day lease within an hour of Dallas this time of year unless the farmer knows there are dove there. You should go west and wait till you get a good report on a specific field. Trigger seems to have a really good place for a day lease at $30 a day. Call some dove outfitters and see what they say in the way of reports and places to hunt.

That's real helpful Dan. Name some outfitters to call like I said who know they have dove within one hour of Dallas. I said if they know they have dove then you are good. I just don't of any close to Dallas. Green's is not within one hour of Dallas and neither is Hamilton or Cisco or anyplace I have hunted successfully. I did the Grayson county leases before and after opening day, there were no birds on the fields I paid money to lease. I leased out west and there were birds and the outfitters to provide fields that had birds. Just have to pay more for gas and time. I would love to lease something in Frisco cause there are still birds around but I don't have any contacts. They hunt right behind my buddies house.
