I think they will all work. I hunted over a mix of GHG, Flambeau and Game Winners this morning.

I have had success with the cheap brand that Academy sells. I usually buy them after the season is over and they go on clearance. They aren't the best quality and the paint chips off pretty easy but I just get another dozen at the end of the season to replace the bad ones. If I remember right they are about $10 a dozen when they go on clearance.

Why are the Herters so much more expensive? I hunted over some 12 year old Herter's diver decoys last season. I'll be hunting over them another decade from now. Try that with Game Winners.

I don't have game winners but I bet my GHG last quite a while. Yeah, I saw you use GHG. They're very good decoys. I was pointing out that the guys who buy new dekes every year or two are tripping over dollars to pick up nickels. GHG should last a good long while. My oldest are four seasons old and still look great. Time will tell if they can match G&H for durability. G&H's paint was the gold standard for a very long time.

The old adage "you get what you pay for" really applys to decoys. Yes you can go cheap and just go pick some hot buys or Game Winners but you will more than likely find yourself back in the store spending the money again a year or two later. You guys that are looking to make an ivestment in a decoy that will last years and years need to look at Dakota Decoys. The new mallard decoys are very good looking. They have plans to come out with full bodies and a full line of duck decoys in the coming seasons. They also have a garuantee on their decoys...you ever see paint chip off of a Dakota and they'll ship you a new one. Kruger Farms actually has videos of guys taking 5 irons to their goose decoys without a scratch. http://www.dakotadecoy.com/mallards.htm#

I'm still rolling with some 10 yr. old Flambeau super magnums with some newer standard Flambeaus mixed in.
I also have some G&H mallards. While the Flambeaus are pretty tough, I need to mix in some new ones.
I have never used decoy paint, I just wash 'em off with soap and water before the season starts.
I'm happy with my Herter's goose decoys, they seem to hold up pretty well.
What brand should I get? GHG? Herters? Flambeau?

Greenhead Gear for the money are fine. I still don't pass up other brands when they are on sale. I alway's pick up decoys after season when they are on clearance. Never can have enough decoys. I am interested to see the new Carry-Lites.

Drake Waterfowl decoys for the win. I use GHG, but I've been thinking about upgrading to the Drake decoys. I like the fact that you can use with or without the keel. Only concern that I have is, how much wind can they take before you need to put the keel back on? Up to 10-15mph maybe?

GHG makes a good looking decoy. I think the more realistic looking the better your odds are. The birds obviously have those bright colors for a reason. I don't know if Flambeau has inproved the quaility of the paint they use but, it used to be good for about 2 seasons and would then flake off.
Live to hunt, hunt to live.

I hunt over GHG, Flambeau, G&H, Game Winner, Carry Lite, Victor and probably some others that I can't think of. I don't replace decoys evey year. I do, however, add to my supply. Couple reasons for getting the Game Winners - cheap, light, and they offer a different look/size. My gf's dad has some pretty old GHG and Game Winners in his bags. I'll have to ask exactly how old they are.

I think they are supposed to be mallards, but they look more like coots at this point. There is no place to wrap the line around them. Oh yeah, I have some Carrylite's too.

Only concern that I have is, how much wind can they take before you need to put the keel back on? Up to 10-15mph maybe? Good question and one I don't have an answer to yet. I have yet to float one in anger, but I hope to have some experimenting done before the season opens. My hypothesis is that without the keels, it will be the size of the waves that determines when you need the keels. If the waves are big enough to break that vacuum on the Breeze Ryder base, that's when they'll need the keels. How hard of a wind that turns out to be I don't really have a handle on yet. ETA: They should perform superbly with the keels on. The way the keel is set up, it's a little lower than a regular keel - maybe an inch or so. Having the weight a little lower will make them very good on rough water.
