Anybody else out there use a slugger? I bought the rifled barrel for my 870 a couple years ago to use in east Texas. I was surprised at the accuracy. The sabot slugs (.45cal hollow pt.) pushes 1900 fps. and accurate within 3" out to 100yds. Very impressive performance for a scattergun.

Why??? When you can take any decent rifle out of the box and get under 2" with factory ammo! Most middle of the road rifles will get you close to or under 1"! If I had no choice and it was the law that we had to use shotguns then I guess I'd have one for deer hunting. But as long as rifles are legal in Texas for deer hunting, I'll stick to birds with my scatter guns.

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!

My Benelli 20" IC Smooth bore shoots under 3" with factory slugs, full size...I have carried it, just never used it on deer. It is vicious on hogs at 50 yards and coyote at 30 feet though!

your not from texas are you? or maybe from the piney woods? i knew a guy, who hunted with us in leakey, he was from cleveland(texas) and he always brought his slug gun. never used it but always brought it. said that when you grow up in east texas, you learn to hunt with a shotgun. i knew he was from the woods though, when every rifle he bought was a semi-auto

I started last year bringing my slug gun with me. I have caught some slack by other guys, but with all these cedars and mesquites, you are bound to have some close in shots that wont be suitable for the rifle. I am under 3" with my 870 express, rifled choke and a red dot on top.

In Iowa we are limited to slug guns for most zones and seasons. My slug gun is a Remington 11-87 w/ rifled barrel and cantilever scope mount topped with a 2x7 Leupold. I've added a custom Monte Carlo stock and had the trigger re-worked to 4 lbs. with no creep. Using premium sabot slugs like the Hornaday SST it is a legit 175 to 200 yard gun.

I just made my old 870 a dedicaited slug gun. I have a 20" smooth bore with a B square and fixed 4. Dead on at 50 probably farther. (Where I use it cant see much farther than 50) Will be used on WMA shotgun only pig hunts and if I get drawn for some of the State Park shotgun only deer hunts. Found a new use for an old gun that was never used.

It ain't easy being me.

how does a shotgun stack up against a rifle as far knockdown? i know alot of big deer are shot with a shotgun up north.

Slugs are cool to hunt with. They'll flat out lift a deer off the ground if they are within 30 yds. They carry quite the wallop. Good to use if your hunting thick brush.

I am 5th generation Texan born and raised. Never shot a deer more than 150 yards. So after reading several periodical articles on modern slug performance, I had to give it a try last year. Only makes since because my land is dense pine forest and hardwood bottoms. The deer I killed last year were all at 100yds give or take a few. Awsome knockdown power from a .45cal slug at 1900fps. mv.

My Dad uses his Rem 870 with a 24" rifled barrel to take deer EVERY year now. Shoots slugs I reload for him using standard hulls / wads and 485 grain sabots. Mostly hunts wooded areas with less than 75 yard shots available. Took a LARGE 9 point three years ago thru the neck at 35 yards that nearly tore the head off. Needless to say, that deer did not run off. He used a centerfire rifles (30-30, 30-06, 308, 7.62x39)for earlier hunts, but now uses the 870 in 12 gauge exclusively. Why? - "I've never had a deer run more than 20 yards after being hit. Makes tracking them a no brainer." Sounds like a good reason to me.
