So Sunday our group got checked by two of the nicest GWs I've ever been in contact with. It wasnt until this moment that I remembered I didnt even transfer my hunter safety card from my license case from last year. So the question is...do we need that little card? I mean that thing is going to wear out sooner or later anyway.

GWs didnt say anything about it. I think they were more worried about Wal trying to make a quick get away on his four wheeler.

He didn't know how to get the shells out of the Pintail shotgun. I was pokin a little fun at him telling him he broke it.

Ha, I have a Pintail and it does take some work to get them out if you haven't done it before. Why didn't he have you unload it for him?

BTW, do you know what size slip on recoil pad fits the stock? I was thinking of breaking the gun down and taking the stock in the store with me.

Wal was that GW just joking with you about the Duck Stamp or serious? At the time I was thinking he was serious and I was all explaining how they mail them now (for most people). I would think they would know but it honestly wouldnt surprise me too much if they didnt.

Yeah man, you absolutely 100% need to have it on you if you were born after 9-2-71. My buddy got a ticket last year...

I still have my Hunter Safety Card from back in the 70's. It's getting kinda ratty around the edges, but it's still legible.

BTW - I'm number 0130... texas

It says on your license if you are required to have the card or not. The system sometime will recognize that you have it and say on your license. If the license says you are good they will not ask for it. I got checked last year and my friend's license said he had his and mine said it was required. I had my card and was in good shape.

My license doesnt say anything about the hunter safety. I remember one year it did say it was needed or something. Anyway...I get checked about once a year and this was the first time I didnt have it on me...they didnt ask to see it the last time if I remember correctly.

I don't carry my HE card because my HE # is on my license. But, I was also born before '71.

It will tell you on your license...but really it will only say it if you were born after 9-2-71. I was born in 75 so it tells me on my license "hunter ed req" and "hip certified"... I still have not got my duck stamp in the mail yet.... frown

hunters education is stupid. im all for it if everyone has to have it, but the age exemption is a joke. i have mine, but being that ive been hunting since i was five, and i was a .50 cal gunner in the infantry, i dont think it is neccesary. meanwhile, my boss who has never hunted, or even held a gun, can go hunt without it because he was born before sept. 71. it should be everybody or nobody.

I know the GW's around our dove lease are checking for hunter safety cards and writing tickets if you don't have it. Better hang on to it.

I'm exempt from hunter safety but will probably take it with my daughter later in the year. I think some other states offer reciprocity for hunter safety, but not the exemption that Texas has.

I am exempt by a couple of months.

I taught the class in the 90's several times when I was an ag teacher.

Most people need it, it is a good program for people new to the sport.

So yeah when I got my license somewhere other than the parks office it did have that "hunter ed req" but this year I got it at the parks office and it pretty much says nothing. It does say "hip certified".

Interesting that it does have something that says "HE#" with a number that follows it. I'm now thinking HE stands for Hunders Education.

That 'something' that says HE# followed with a number is your Hunters Education number. If that is on your license you probably won't need to have it on you, but to be safe I would always carry your Hunters Ed card.

Where do you find the list of reciprocal states? I have a hunter's safety from IN but don't have a TX one...don't really want to sit through that bore again if I don't have too.

I think all states are reciprocal. One of my buddies from work did his in MO and did not have a problem. He said all states were reciprocal. He called TPWD about it.

I got checked by a GW on opening day of Dove season. Really nice. He just checked plug and license. Even though he didn't ask for the card, I asked him if we still had to carry the card if the number was still listed on the license. He said that by law you are suppose to. But followed it up with saying that they rarely check the cards.

I carry my hunter education card just to be safe even though the number is on my license. They are easy to get copies. Also, we had a friend that didn't have his card when he got checked last year. They somehow called it in and let him go. So, I imagine it just depends on the GW. Better safe than sorry.

A new question: If you get a ticket for no hunters ed card, but have taken it. I wonder if it is like an insurance ticket. You send in proof to the judge and they just dismiss the ticket? Anybody experience this?
