Tomorrow will be my son's first duck hunt. I'd like for him to have a good time of course. After scouting all week I have it narrowed down to two spots:

Spot A: Hard to get to, always has a few each time scouted. We shouldn't have a hard time getting this spot to ourselves, but ya never know.

Spot B: A couple of miles away on the same lake. There have consistently been a pretty nice sized group here (4X spot A), but on the flip side everyone knows it. Lots of pressure I'm sure.

So, which one would you do? I'm leaning toward A since all the shooting at B will move them around - hopefully to us.

For your son's first duck hunt you want it to be enjoyable and about the time spent with the two of you. Don't mess it up with others crowding you or getting peppered or having to worry about how loud he will be.

If you can't lick your own, you can't sit on the dog stand!

Expect some shooting to stir em up in the morning, the birds from Spot B might very likely come join ya at Spot A.

Good Luck!

Take into account how hard it will be on your son if you are walk-in hunting.

Everyone knows spot B just north of that lake is going to have tons of pressure... especially on opening day. Heck... I know some guys hunting there myself. Go to spot A. rofl

Here is the infamous Spot A that we decided to hit for the opener. Either the weather kept others in bed or the fact that it isn't easy to find paid off.

My son isn't officially a duck slayer yet after his first hunt. He got shots at 3 or 4 groups (only one of which was very big), but boy those suckers are fast. He still had a heck of a good time, never complained about 2 AM or cold/hungry, and can't wait for the next trip - even if he didn't get anything and it rained the whole time. When we got home I found him on the thrown reading my DU magazine article about tips for Early Teal success. Then he asked where the BWT call was, how to use it, and actually got it down pretty good. That... is officially a duck hunter...

I'm looking forward to many years of having my best hunting buddy in the blind with me. Can't get any better than that.

I would hunt the spot with the least amount of pressure. You may not see as many birds there now, but when the pressure picks up in other areas, you'll probably start seeing more birds. up

Teach em to love hunting and then they can take you and do all the work when you get older.

Good point! And that can't happen too soon. I got the boat where I wanted it and set out all the dekes in some thick gumbo. Started putting up the boat blind and realized I had it facing the wrong way... bang

Had to drag the boat through the mud to a different spot, move all the dekes, then setup the blind again. Even in thin waders my arse was sweating like a blind lesbian in a fish market.

Happy Birthday by the way... cheers

I was faced with the same problem during opening season last year and chose the less know spot while my buddy to the place where we had seen more birds but was well known...he was there with 8 other hunters and I was all by myself with my limit.

Keep him going, he has the fever! Last year my daughter (8) got her first bird. She asks every weekend, when does DUCK season start?

Yes she did wear camo.
