Well, how'd you do? I didn't apply for NM this year. I need to fit it in sometime.

My grandson drew his 3rd choice for Unit 32 . This was his first time for an out of state hunt. I didn't draw but will be going to help glass and pack out his first mule deer. We have never hunted this unit or terrain before so we have some learning and scouting to do before the season starts.

Congrats to him. I think the west side rocky/hilly. East side is flat, if I recall. Gohunt says they recently improved access in some areas. Said some of the public land is landlocked but most of it can be accessed by back roads or walking. Good luck.

I drew a deer hunt in unit 34. Nov 11-15. Not going to be able to go I just found out. Work conflict.

I drew early archery elk for a highly sought after unit as a non resident. Approximately 1% odds based on last year's results. Time to get a big one.

Congrats, some times your the fly some times your the windshield. Havent drawn elk tag in that state in 12 years. Thats the beauty of NM. Just when you think you dont have a chance you draw a tag that odds are so extreme its just doesnt make sense, but your names on the tag and thats all that matters

Didn’t put in this year ( scared I might actually draw and have to cancel the trip) but will be back at it next year.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Lol I probably normally would not tell but it is such a long shot draw and some folks on here may be familiar with the area or even know people who hunted it...drew 34. Cloudcroft area. If anyone has hunted that unit I'd love to see pics of bulls. My uncle lives in Carlsbad and sounds like his friends are gonna have a turnkey camp ready for me. Should be a good opportunity at 320+.

BOBO this is only the 2nd year I have applied to NM elk. I have incrementaly increased as I could afford more states. I bought a lotto ticket the day I drew LOL. My season was gonna be focussed on my buddies moose tag if he draws and archery pronghorn that I burned 6 points for. Well I'll be turning my PH tag in when I draw and my buddy wants to come on my hunt!

That whole tri-unit cluster is hard to draw. I put my daughter in for the youth elk rifle tag in 34. I hunt 36/37 alot for deer and bears. I havent drawn an elk tag in NM in 12 years, but Im not complaining this year. NM was very good to me.

If you need an outfitter PM me. I know two really good ones. They will be already hunting in Aug and have alot of big bulls found. They both run bears in Aug. At very least Id think about hiring them for 2-3 days to get a good idea of where the water is.

Look forward to pictures.

Thanks for the offer but I am hoping my uncle and his buddies will have the intel I need to get into the action. Even if that wasn't the case I could not afford it in my hunting budget at this time. I am hoping I can swing a scouting trip this summer just for fun but those guys get after it pretty good and the most serious guy just retired. None of them drew a tag so I think they are all hunting for me this year. Crazy luck. My grandparents ashes were spread in the Sacramento's last year so like to think that had something to do with it.

Congrats blancobuster. I've been in that unit but I haven't hunted it. I like the unit and I saw a log of elk. Good luck.

Thanks. I am looking forward to it...the little reading I have done I won't have an issue getting into elk. I have spent marginally more time in 36/Ruidoso and would generally prefer a more roadless area if not wilderness like 36. On my elk hunt last year I think we hiked around 8 miles back, so it is quite strange for me to have so many elk in a unit with so many roads, but that is the unit my uncle said to enter and glad I did. I have been pretty successful in Colorado hunting pretty high pressure units on public land, so hoping the learning pays off in a big way. I am looking at how to go on a scouting trip and I think just going a week before my hunt is going to be the best option for me.

No, he is still looking for his arrow roflmao

34 has bigger bulls them 36 IMO. 36 does has a high density of 200-270 bulls. With all the burns its easier to glass them, but not always hunt them. you will be happy with 34 tag vs 36

Find water find the bulls.

That's the plan! I am terrible at bugling so glad I got the early hunt where cow calling may be effective
