To me caliber availability tends to quit mattering as much if you're going to pair it down to only five. If you're only going to load five calibers for the rest of your life there's no reason you can't stockpile the hell out of that stuff LOL

My picks came down to what I was going to do with the gun, and what guns were available in those calibers. I prefer a 30-06 to a 308, but there's guns that I want that are not available in 30 aught 6, so 308 it is

Great minds think alike! HAHA.
I haven't narrowed it down to 5 yet, but I think I'm close to topping out the number of calibers I have. So yes stock piling it is for me, especially since the inflation of recent years (not political just factual). For reloading, I am currently limiting myself to 3 bullet calibers; 22, 6.5mm and 308.

This is a tough one. I used to use a 30-06 fifty years ago and there's no way I'd shoot that now. Also never shot a 22 WMR until, say, 2000 and now it's a favorite. Here's my 2024s:
9MM
22 LR
22 WMR
357/38 special
5.56

It's not what you say, or think, that counts. It is what you DO!

5 would be a luxury, i fear the day we might have to decide on 1. That would most definitely be a 22 rifle.

30-06 because I am not giving up the one I inherited, and it will work

12 gauge because I need a shotgun. My main is a 3.5” gun and that’s the one I am bringing even if I am shooting 2 3/4” shells.

.22 LR because i need a rimfire and my kid’s .22’s are special and sentimental. Sorry .22 mag i love ya

9mm because I need a pistol and it will work

Last but not least, number 5 is my .177 Beeman R9. Because I can get by on those other 4, but my R9 is the mist satisfying and cheapest of all to shoot, and i love it. Also good gun for small game and backyard plinking.

My one for anything, for whatever reasons, is gonna be a 12 gauge unless I am on the run just trying to survive. Then it’s the .22’s and an AR15.

The first thing I would do is get some boys together knowing that a group is always better than trying to go solo.
Then I would make sure they knew the difference between "calibers" and cartridges!" grin

My five CARTRIDGES would be:

9 mm Luger
.308 Win.
300 HAM'R
.22 LR
12 ga.

(I would love to be able to add a .357 Mag and .45 ACP to the mix.)

If we can assume ammo availability is no issue:

17 WSM
9mm
.357
6.5 Grendel
30-06

Based on current ammo availability here:

22 LR
9mm
.357
.223/5.56
30-06

Didn't list shotgun because its a gauge and not a caliber. But I would add a 12 ga to this list for my shotgun. I'd replace the 9mm on both lists with the 12 ga if necessary.
