I’m interested in getting my first can, especially with the short wait times now. I’ve got a weatherby vanguard s2 in 7-08 that would be the main host. Can I have it chopped down to 18 or 18.5” and have it threaded? Any way it would be detrimental? I just don’t want to walk around with what would end up being a broomstick in length.
Follow up question, all of the other calibers I may suppress in the future are all smaller than 300/308, what is your favorite multi caliber can and what is the best way to attach and move it from gun to gun?

No detriment as long as you have enough shoulder for the suppressor thread shoulder (.725 for a 5/8-24).
I’m a direct thread guy. Everyone’s favorite can is the one they bought…good luck!

Yes, I move the suppressors around between hosts.
I use thread protectors at times…I don’t always have a thread protectors on them around the house but if they leave the house they either have a suppressor screwed on or a thread protector.

I have a can that I move from host to host as well. Everything Judd said above applies.

I have a .30 cal can that I often use on smaller calibers with great success. . If you go QD, I'm a big fan of the YHM universal QD system that I use with my non-YHM can. Makes moving from host to host super simple, but you do need to invest in some mounts.

One thing I didn’t see mentioned is you are talking about a sporter profile barrel, even when cutting down you probably don’t have enough barrel to thread 5/8x24 which is the standard thread on most 30 cal cans. You could thread it to 1/2x24 and get an adapter but that could lead to issues.
If you cut down to 16” you may have enough diameter to thread to 5/8” but it would be close. I’m sure there is a recommended min size. You are 100% correct that you want the shortest possible barrel to start with when you put a suppressor on.

The guy that did my 700’s (both Walmart-special sporter barrels) cut the barrel, added a shoulder, and threaded. It’s been just fine.
The secret to a long life is to try not to shorten it.

Thanks for the information guys. I’ll be getting out the micrometer and checking to see if it’s got enough there to make the shoulder. Cowboy, I’m not far from you, where did you go to have yours done?

I recently threaded my Howa 1500 in 204 Ruger. I threaded it for 1/2-28 and then put an adapter on there. I did it this way as it is a sporter weight barrel and threading for the 5/8-24 would not have left enough meat at the shoulder. I red loc-tited the adapter to the barrel, and I can unscrew my can and the adapter does not come off with it. Works mint.
