I was looking at purchasing new feeders and looking at 1000# vs 2000# capacity feeders. I initially thought the 2000# would be better so I wouldn't have to be out there as often. But after thinking about it, it seems like the stand and fill might be a better option just from an ease of filling it perspective. Standing on the ground filling vs on a ladder seems much more convenient. Thoughts?

For the protein feeder, I figured 2000# low profile and just stand on the trailer to fill it.

I will only ever buy stand and fill feeders going forward. Just the thought of going up and down a ladder with 40 bags of corn makes me exhausted.

You may have answered your own question. Your thoughts are similar to mine. I think many real large feeders are not filled by hand. Also, feed can go bad and if there is a stopage of some kind you may have an issue getting it all out. Everyones situation can be different, of course.

It's not for everyone's situation, and they are expensive, but a feed trailer, that blows it in, is the bomb. Now, not every feed store has bulk corn that you can drive under and fill, so you gotta consider that. More do have bulk protein. My old shoulders couldn't do many more bags.

First off, what’s wrong with taking the time, freeing your mind and getting there more often? Second off, why in the world would you consider getting on the ladder not good enough to be used at home and adding a 50 pound sack to the equation?

We use Texas Hunter 1,200 pounders. They are easy to move around, cost effective and durable. Back up the P/U and feed from the tailgate. Easy peasy.

All the other hunters in camp share silos and a fancy feed wagon as described by Creek. We are going to do something else when we can no longer pay the physical toll and did not want to be a part of their accounting.

We use 2000# protein feeders. There are 11 of them on the ranch. 2600 acres in Kinney county. 5 hunters, HF. We pay the feed store to have them filled. Of course they don't all empty at the same time. So we have to do a few bags by hand occasionally while waiting for others to catch up. His truck can carry 10 tons and has a 26 ft boom on the auger. He can fill some of them from outside the pens. I am switching corn feeders ASF stand and fill 1000 pounders. I've got a few more to buy but the plan is to have feed store fill them as well. They corn feeders should all run out at the same time making the plan work a little better. Luckily we aren't that far from feed store. His fees for delivery are more than fair and the bulk pricing helps too.

The whole plan is to save our backs and avoid injuries.

We have found weevils make a mess if the corn stays in too long. Besides, climbing a ladder is stupid if you have the alternative of buying a stand and fill.

Winch em up , hand crank, ladder feeders are a huge risk on a big ranch or hunting with kiddos. 600-1000lb stand and fills are the safer, easier to fill and move around.

Yes, it is wonderful. Not having to fill feeders gives me more time to work on predator control. We just had coyotes take down an axis fawn and mother. So I am intently focused on thinning coyotes out. Racoons are also an issue for us. I have a pic of 18 coons hitting a protein feeder in the middle of the night. I set the dog proof traps and have gotten their numbers more in check. It's easy to tell which feeders they are hitting. Their scat gives them away. So I move the traps around. I'm wanting to do some night hunting on the coons. I know they are ground nest raiders and we have turkey and quail. I'd like to help keep their numbers up.
