Health and other issues have put a damper on my hunting since November last year. On the road to recovery and overdue time in the woods. This old man is feeling like a kid, getting excited about a spring Squirrel hunt. Any other Squirrel hunters ready for the Spring season?

I’d love to go but I haven’t spent anytime looking for a place

They have youngsters this time of year so I give them a pass until fall. Have fun though. I’m just a long time squirrel hunter and I’m a bit sentimental about them.

I haven't squirrel hunted since the early 80's in Madison County. It was my favorite hunting in that part of the state. I hunted with a Ruger 10/22 with a 4X scope and it was deadly. My only problem was that squirrels are the only critters that my Bride would not cook because she thought that they looked like rats.
Adios,
Gary

Growing up, All my Uncles and Cousins would get together after the May 1st opener and share their Harvest from their favorite spots. Stories were told, some bragged and others lied, but it was a good time for all. Typically, there were two pots of stew; One I referred to as normal and the other so Hot/spicey my lips would go numb. Sure miss those days.

If I could have been part of it, I would have enjoyed the "Squirrel Camp" culture like was popular in SE Texas. It used to be a bigger thing than it is today. Even more than Deer Camps. I will probably go at least once this spring. Maybe one of the places I used to Squirrel hunt years ago or check out someplace new.

My favorite hunting spot was along Bedias Creek. There were lots of cat squirrels there. Never was much of a fan of the fox squirrels.
Adios,
Gary

I’m in. Taking my grown son for a little camping and hunting next month. I’ll probably go by myself a few times, too.

Hunted two hours this morning and the rain set in. Nothing moving but very peaceful!
Lol…pull into the driveway and a City Squirrel is hanging off the bird feeder. Pretty sure he was laughing at me!

Ours starts on Memorial Day. I will be on the road, but June 1st you better believe me an the kids will be after the squirrels. Half of my property is covered up in oaks and hickorys, even a few chinkapins.

Gonna slather a few spots with peanut butter before i go on the road tomorrow. After a couple weeks, when the squirrels are on to that peanut butter, it will be easy pickens for the fam. I can’t wait.

No but the honey flavored stuff seems to attract them better. I think it’s the higher sugar content.

I have had some luck scattering the powdered peanut butter around but it is too expensive to use to attract squirrels.

I’m almost done with my version of the ultimate squirrel gun. This fall it will be putting in some work.

Here’s mine. Dr. Death

I also have a “benjermin” in the line up as well as a sweet .22 mag for them days I can’t get close. And of course a 12 gauge.

But Dr. Death is my Beeman R9 and she is first string in my line-up.

Original H. Koon snake charmer 410 with a black walnut thumb hole stock that was roughed out on a duplicator. I’m down to final sanding.

A lot of people don’t know it but squirrels used to be the most popular game animal in the United States. But there were a lot less deer back then, also it was before the entertainment industry got hooks in it.

Yep, have a few older game cookbooks and the majority of recipes are for small game. Hunting was different back then. I do at least one weekend squirrel hunt a year with some buddies and kids - it is always a great time. Also a good way to spend the afternoon alone or with the dog.

That is a very nice R9 you have there. What pellets are your preferred squirrel ammo?

I put some water on it to get the dust off and see what the grain will look like with an oil finish.

Yes Sir! Around my house growing up, opening day of the Fall season was way more important that opening day of deer season! I come from a whole family of squirrel hunters, we didn't miss it! I rarely go now, becoming a bowhunter will screw up a good squirrel hunter! roflmao

Squirrel hunting was big where I grew up in southwest Virginia, no deer baiting so you had to find natural food sources which overlapped nicely with squirrel food sources. Fall squirrel hunting was a good scouting/hunting warmup before deer season. We didn't have a spring season though. It's a lot easier to hike through the woods with a brace of squirrels than a deer.
