Got a few minutes to go to my place and right at sundown I finished up with some emails, grabbed the .22 and snuck down to the meadow to see if I could slip up on a hog. The last couple walkabouts didn’t turn up much but this time as I approached the feeder I could see a few hogs milling about. Corn was already gone and they were spreading out, there was a rust red one under the protein feeder so I started the sneak, I was just about in position when a boar came out of the brush and quickly made me at about 40 yards. Strongly quartering to me, I pulled the first shot but followed up quickly with several more, hitting him at least two more times. He made it about 50 yards and piled up in an oak Mott.

Stalking pigs with a .22 has become my favorite way to hunt hogs.

Smelliest hog I’ve ever killed, most boars I’ve shot were fine but this guy was RANK!

Off to the bone pile he went.

Usually CCI mini-mags but this one fell to 40 grain Remington thunderbolts.

I have a bunch of stingers I need to use as well but haven’t tried them. I’ve had no issue killing pigs up to 200 lbs with regular 40 grain ammo in the 1200 fps range, but I usually try and shoot them behind the ear

Yes sir. Usually sneak up to around 25-30 yards, put one in their ear and they go to sleep. Smaller pigs die quick with a heart/lung shot.

I’ve shot quite a few animals with a .22. The ones that give me fits and require multiple shots are feral cats and raccoons. I’ve been charged by a wounded coon that I shot in the top of the head. Honestly never had any trouble shooting hogs though.

I don’t like making a lot of noise on a property so a .22 is much preferable from a disturbance factor than a centerfire.

I like the neighbors knowing I'm there. One in particular, and now his "manager." rifle

Remington thunderbolts - really, can't find good ammo? Tried them and half the bullet would spin or fall out,

I’ve been shooting Remington thunderbolts pretty much my entire life. They are plinking bullets; good for shooting steel, rocks, cans, cactus, etc. I normally shoot CCI but thunderbolts are what I had in this magazine.

Got the job done though

Would have never thought to "plink" hogs with a .22. I'll have to give it a try!
