First off, I don't reload and don't wanna start. I've killed a bunch off pigs, but last I checked, they're making more and I'm running mighty low. I love my little Ruger Mini-30.

From what I can tell, every major U.S. manufacturer has just stopped making any 7.62X39 ammo. And there doesn't seem to be anything but FMJ anywhere. 'Got BassPro/Cabelas to ship me some Nosler FMJ, but it's Hungarian.

Marketing decision with too many other calibers that sell better?
Liability of being linked to an AK-47 or "assault rifle" mass shooter?

I have no idea what the post-Covid, post ammo shortage landscape is like on a business level. 'Just thought someone on here might have some insight. Thanks.

Grafs has Hornady SST in 7.62x39 in stock, but I like the Prvi Partizan PSP for a whole lot cheaper in my SKS. Winchester/Remington is super overpriced in comparison to it and S&B soft points.

There really isn't a good source for good match grade or quality hunting ammo for the 7.62x39. It's all FMJ crap and low end ammo. I load the 123 Hornady SST as a good hunting, expanding round. It's certainly not the least expensive compared to the crappy surplus ammo, but it's good and consistent match grade hunting ammo. I have 150 rounds available currently.

I've been pleased with S&B and Herter's (made by S&B a few years ago, maybe still) 123 gr PSP in my Mini 30. Don't know if you can find them anywhere now.

Thanks all! I've got some coming now. I'm down to my last box of S&B, after I've used up the Hornady varmint I had. I'll keep the FMJs in case I'm overrun...by pigs...two-legged or 4 legged.

As an aside - I went in Bass Pro today, just to check. First, you notice all the signs and solar-powered security cameras all over the parking lot. (The Rim area in NW San Antonio is getting hammered by smash and grabs, plus outright auto theft.) Then inside, they've moved the ammo into what used to be the custom gun room a long time ago, and it's staffed by...let's just say "an odd duck" that'll talk your ear off. I got the impression that, no matter what caliber you're looking for, he'll tell you that there's a better one. When I asked if they had any 7.62X39, his response was "We don't have any of that Russian crap." I'm sure the coworkers are relieved he's "sequestered". There was hardly anything on the shelves, like they'd just prefer to be out of the ammo business altogether. It was just sad all around. I know it was late morning on a Thursday, but there shoulda been more people in that store than there were.

That's an odd response... esp. since the 7.62x39 round is likely the most used round globally... 5.56 might give it a run for the title given the NATO use... but I'd put my money on the 7.62x39 having the title. It probably overall has the the highest kill count as well... so, not sure the word "crap" applies. Bit of a fan of the caliber myself - even have an AR chambered in it... although you really can't beat an AK chambered in it.

Never really understood some people's dislike of the Russians... The psychopath Stalin died a long time ago... they're not a communist country anymore (constitutional republic now (and capitalist society) - which everyone should recognize because that's exactly what the USA is LOL) ... they were on the right side of WWI and the right side of WWII...

Just saying, I've met a lot of Russians and as far as I can tell, they're just like us Americans... well, except that their country has about a 20% larger white population than ours... think they're about 80% white and we're about 60% white these days. Maybe that's why people dislike them, they're too white for this day and age ROFLMAO.

All mine is Eastern European because my rifle is Eastern European. I have a mold to cast bullets for 7.62X39 but most of my loading has been with foreign PPU jacketed bullets.

SGAmmo has sub-sonic Hornady for a whopping $1.70 per round.

Pass the gravy.
