I was aware the state was doing away with safety inspections for vehicles, but was recently told by the place that does my annual inspections the same will be true for trailers. If true, I guess we’ll just have to hope all those shot-in-the-arse trailers will have working brakes and good tires. Granted, many don’t already but annual inspections offered at least some level of control.

What is/was the impetus for doing away with them on vehicles?

They never accomplished anything. You could pass inspection, be gone a hundred yards and have a headlight burn out and the inspection was still valid. If you’re in an emissions county, they will still be required.

Only trailers with a GVWR of 7500 or over required inspections now anyway. As for doing them away on cars, data showed it didn’t make a flip of difference safety wise is what I read.

For emission counties it will just be checking the emission requirements, not the full state inspection from what I understand.

I can't think of any reason to check insurance on the influx of illegals

That's already done for the registration.

The .gov wants more money. The fee is the same and the county collects it.

The mechanic/ inspection shop is now cut out of the loop.

Earlier this morning, I had to show proof of insurance before getting an inspection and didn't have to show it when I later purchased the registration sticker. But I can easily see the need to show proof of insurance being pushed to the usual registration places in those counties where an emission test isn't required and safety inspections disappear.

That is the way I read it also. Lets' see, 22 million vehicles x $7 = 154,000,000.00 to the state without them lifting a finger. Our cost doesn't change but the local inspection shops loose that money and all they made replacing light bulbs, wiper blades, etc. The place I use/used denied lots of vehicles for slick tires and faulty breaks, those type of vehicles will be on the road come 2025 and beyond. Before you ask, I have seen them do it and then get cussed out when they tell the vehicle owner they still owed them the $7.

I could care less about 7 bucks. The wasted time getting it inspected is what I’m happy is going away.

The other reason for the legislation is the inspection stations that would say your wipers are bad. You can buy ours (3 dollar china wipers) for 25 bucks and we will pass you.

No it didn’t. It’s just another tax. It accomplishes nothing else.

My old company has had to leave more than one trailer on the side of the road. They are a zero tolerance entity it seems. Could be we were over 10k gvwr with a DOT sticker, but idk. They once made us park one on the side of the highway because a section of the reflective tape on the trailer side was rubbed off by a forklift.
