What do you do when your pup becomes possessive of whatever he's got in his mouth?
My 5 mo old GSP will retrieve a bumper and has no problems giving it up. However, once he gets a frozen bird in his mouth, that bird belongs to him!!! How do I get him to release?
Right now all I do is entice him with something else. Worked a few times but now he's wise to it. Apprecaite the help

I have the same problem with my 3 month old lab.
Here is what I have been told on numerous forums:
1 - Blow in his nose - May get bit 2 - Blow in his ear - Still may get bit 3 - Lift him by his flank 4 - Have cut weiners in your hand when he returns with the bird
While I am definately not a trainer, this was everything that was recomended to me. Also, everyone says to put real birds (dead or alive) away as the dog is already birdy and has no issues with a bird being in his mouth. Stick with bumpers they say.
The consensus is that all of this will be corrected as obedience training progresses, the dog get's older and force fetch is trained.
My .02 spend it wisely.
