I don’t really experiment much.

Twenty years ago I was strictly Blantons. It started getting tough to find. A few years ago I was Buffalo Trace, it’s was getting hard to find.
Was on Elijah Craig for last two years, needing a change.

Went back to looking for Buffalo trace. Guy recommended Broken Thorn. It’s ok.
I could stick with it for a few months.

Any others with a similar profile?

I can make you a bunch of samples to try and get them hand delivered to Dallas proper.

I would strongly recommend trying a few things before you buy….. your going to be looking for something 90 proof and from Kentucky.

Unfortunately every distiller has a flavor profile and ANYTHING Buffalo Trace will be hit or miss…

If you’d be willing to step up to 100(ISH) proof, the options are many, many, many….

How do you typically drink your bourbon, ice, coke, water, straight, neat?

Listen to me!

I got sooo tired of chasing Weller/Buffalo Trace B.S. I always asked the question what is close to those whiskey’s taste wise.

Again listen to me, I drink nightly…and love my evening drink over ice. The closest and even better is Larceny. It is my go to and extremely happy.

Larceny is on point! Also go their site and read about the history.

As close as you can get.

These all come from the Buffalo Trace Distillery..

Blantons
Buffalo Trace
Eagle Rare
Weller
EH Taylor

I also like the wheated bourbons and everything from Buffalo Trace.

I like Elijah Craig as well.

Woodford reserve is good

While it seems to be a lot different than what I typically like I really like the Balcones Pot Still

Jefferson’s Ocean though is one of my favorites that’s not from buffalo trace.

No Elmer T Lee. buy Evan Williams Single Barrel or Michtures Sour Mash

No Eagle Rare, buy Russell 10 year or Tin Cup 10 year or Widow Jane

Let me be clear, for the half gallon pricing as well Larceny cannot be beat. It is a pre rush Buffalo trace/Weller pricing as well. Don’t chase the hype, it took me years to find this replacement.

You will thank me later.

Walking Stick is very close to Blantons and usually pretty easy to find.

Weller is a wheated bourbon, if that's what you like try Makers Mark. Old Emmer was ok at best.

Oddly Buffalo Trace bourbons are easy to find in Wyoming for us but Weller is not. Go figure.

Kings Liquor in Frisco is where I bought mine a few weeks ago. I bought two bottles and struck up a conversation with the owners. We got to talking about the Buffalo Trace whiskeys. I mentioned how hard finding Buffalo Trace was. I guess since I bought $100 worth, he asked if I wanted a bottle of BT, I said, "you got one"? He went in the back and bought out a bottle, Think it was $39.00?

Makers and Weller taste nothing alike imo. Larceny is a decent replacement. I don't mind Bibb and Tucker or Heaven Hill either.

If you like wheated bourbon, Lone Elm is the best I’ve had. I’m an antique weller fan and I can say that with ease.

Try Traveler, Specs had it the other day for 33.00. I also am liking Milam and Greene, Specs had three varieties of this one too 40.00-60.00. Basil Hayden was my go to prior to BT.

I may be on your same profile. Don’t care for makers mark. Will try larceny.

I’m not big on the proof.

Benchmark is worth a try Roll Tide, I have all six variations if you would like to try them. The standard offering is in almost every liquor store. I like all of them, top floor has been reviewed as close to Buffalo Trace but, they have a 90 proof offering and that’s what I believe you’re looking for….

I usually pick up Buffalo Trace any time I see it (if I don't already have a backup to the one that is opened), but here are the following bourbons that I enjoy and can find almost anywhere:

Woodford Reserve Double Naked
Bowman Small Batch
Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Early Times Bottled in Bond
Very Old Barton 100 Proof (news flash, it isn't that old, but still tasty and cheap)
Old Forester 1920
Old Forester 1910

Thank you Lefty. You are always very hospitable. I don’t have a real deep taste or knowledge. Just like the “spice” type flavor of Buffalo trace. Elijah Craig is smooth to me.

I will certainly try benchmark and larceny. Can’t find BT anyway.
The guy recommended Broken Thorn, it’s not bad at all.

If you’re going to buy Rowan’s creek I suggest stepping up to Noah’s Mill. Noah’s Mill is my absolute favorite whiskey and you can just proof it down from the 115 mark to where you’re comfortable, these two are the same whiskey just at different proofs. A warning however, Willet gets a lot of hate in the whiskey community.

Roll where do you live? I’ve got some extra BT that I don’t mind parting with. I don’t drink near what I used to so I could spare a couple bottles. I might even have an extra barrel pick.

Spend time with the ones you love. Time is not guaranteed.

Got to sample 4 different single barrels of Buffalo Trace and picked a great barrel, also got a VIP tour with Freddie Johnson. Pretty incredible morning

Went back to looking for Buffalo trace. Guy recommended Broken Thorn. It’s ok.
I could stick with it for a few months.

Any others with a similar profile?

Not sure of profiles and I guess I am not that sophiscated. I drink what my tastes like .

I've been on a Four Roses Single Barrel kick for a couple of years now. Goes down easy and smooth with a real nice finish. Interesting how there is a huge range of individualized tastes when it comes to bourbon. I'll just recommend it and as usual YMMV.

I am also looking at price along with the flavor, I can get a half gallon of Larceny for about 45 bucks. A half gallon for a smooth tasting whiskey at a very reasonable price without having to chase the Manager of the store down to find out what he/she has in back at twice the cost for half amount of the volume.

Figured I'd bring this thread back to life. For anyone wanting BT, Planet Spirit in Princeton has quite a stock for $35.

Not a terrible price but is should be around $25. Im lucky, I've got a store that sells all their allocated bottles at MSRP.

I agree, but $35 is better than most stores trying to sell for $50+. Use to have a store like that back in Arkansas, but haven't found one yet since moving back.

My Specs had probably 30+ bottles of BT a couple of weeks ago $26ish for the 750ml. I haven't been back since to see if they still have some.

My specs said they get shipment on 1 Thursday a month. But don’t know which Thursday.

I told him thanks for nothing.

Specs near me is the same….I’ll roll through there on Thursdays…when they get it, it’s a few cases….limit is two, but if there I buy it. Weller is the same. They are both 24.95 I think.

I have read that Goody Goody carries a store brand called Kelsey Creek that is basically a nine year aged Eagle Rare. Not sure if that is true or not.

It is Buffalo Trace but I doubt its aged 9 years. ER is age stated as 10. Most likely a four or five year aged bourbon.

Some of the best bourbons are only aged 5-7 years. Booker’s for example, but I’m partial.

Kelsey Creek is made by Barton 1792. They are owned by Sazerac who also owns Buffalo Trace,

This has been a good read. Larceny is pretty kick azz, especially for the price and availability. [Linked Image]

From a commonsense perspective, I completely agree with you. Would I pay that,,,, hell no. There are knuckle heads out there that will light money on fire for certain bottles. One could make the same argument when it comes to high end mechanical watches. I'm not talking about a stainless sport model that has 28,800 beats per hour like what's on your wrist. There are countless people that have a high tolerance to torching money for a Richard Mille. The price for one of them is laughable. At the end of the day, what something is worth, is what someone else is willing to pay for it....

Thats insanity. I love bourbon and have a fantastic collection but I have paid MSRP or just above it on all my bottles...including my Lot B. I have some really good bottles and WL Weller and George T Stagg are the two I would love to own, and might overpay for...but not that much.
