That first part of the movie made me sweat, and that was a few years after boot camp.

It's a good movie, the boot camp was pretty accurate for boot camp in the 70s.
I think the DIs greatest pleasure was making recruits break their composure and laugh. They were definitely wise azzez.

The movie has had an unparalleled effect of pop culture world wide.

I could go the deepest, darkest most desolate stretch of the amazon and whisper “ me so horny” and a Pygmy will pop out from a cutout underneath a log and reply “ me love you long time”

I saw DI make a classmate of mine carry around a potted plant for a month to make up for the waste of oxygen that the guy was.

I was at MCRD San Diego, with day 1 being May 27, 1971. A memorable day. The DI in Full Metal Jacket was so close to being just what I encountered that I really got a bit uncomfortable in the first part of the movie. Too close to reality. Man, that was a long time ago.

I have a buddy that went in to the Corps in 1989 and did boot at MCRD San Diego and he said he saw everything that the DI did in the movie from his DI’s. He happened to be in Boot during his birthday so I sent him a card with a large Black women in a bikini that said “Wish they all could be California girls”. They didn’t know it was his birthday until then so he got to spend the day in the pit doing pushups. It didn’t help that one of his DI’s was a dark green Marine.

Of course. What an amazing movie. Gunny was spectacular, but I think my favorite DI scene is Forest Gump. That man was freaking brilliant.

Enjoyed boot camp save for a run in with DS Taylor. Good memories embracing the suck at Ft Sill Jan-March.

Apparently he was a consultant on set but ended up getting the roll. His rants weren't scripted, he just let them fly of the top of his head.

It's a movie every 16 year old boy should watch.

Stanley Kubrick hired R.Lee Ermy as a consultant. But soon realized Ermy should just play the role. Ermy said "I am going tk make it authentic." Kubrick replied, I wouldn't have it any other way.

In the scene where they were in the Huey and the guy was shooting people in the rice paddy as they flew over, that guy was the original DI. Ermy ended up taking his role but Kubrick didn’t want to 86 him from the film entirely.

Read a little bit about the production of the movie....the filming itself was quite a rodeo.

Its interesting to note that FMJ was one of the only movies to show the urban warfare in Vietnam, fighting in the city of Hue vs. all the other movies showing jungle warfare.

Also, If you want to get a grasp on how old that movie is now, Private Cowboy is about to celebrate his 70th birthday.....

Full Metal Jacket is my favorite Vietnam movie ever, better than platoon, Apocalypse now, the Deer Hunter, etc.

Full Metal Jacket is a great movie. Arriving at MCRD Paris Island on a bus from Beaufort SC at around 11pm in January 1972 was an awakening for sure. After the Receiving Center DI boarded the bus and gave his short speech he told us we had 1 minute to get off the bus and onto the footprints outside and he just used 30 seconds of that time talking to us. The first guy off the bus got knocked back into the bus by a DI handing out black eyes.
I can attest that the DI’s in Basic Training were exactly as depicted in the movie.
The DI’s in our platoon were all seasoned Vietnam Vets and viewed it as their job to teach you how to survive.
Out of 80 recruits originally assigned only 30 of us graduated without being recycled.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. Edmund Burke
