This is a running argument between my dad and me... he likes Conway, better than Gary Stewart's version. But i think he's coming around  I'm opposite.

I don't know how you can pick either on that song. I'm a huge fan of both. I think Gary Stewart has the more unique voice, but Conway is more silky smooth.

There are certainly songs 'covered' by other artists than the original that have done it better.
Case in point. The song 'Amarillo By Morning', written and first recorded in 1973 by Terry Stafford. BUT covered and made popular by George Strait nearly a decade later.
The song 'Lyrics' are great, but Terry Stafford can't sing worth a damn. George Strait went on to make that song his signature song, having done it MUCH better.
In other cases the original artist is better (or simply more recognizable). Sometimes one rendition is just liked better because it is the one you 'grew up with' or heard first. That is true for me with the Conway version of the song the OP posted, but both are good.

I would never choose to listen to country music though I don't typically mind it in small doses. If I was asked to pick out a song from either of those guys I could not do it and I don't know that I've ever heard that specific song. Having said that I listened to both and chose Conway.

I chose Conway. His voice has a heart felt care sound and the music did overpower his voice. Gary Stewart is ok I just like Conway's version better.

Gary S is an all time favorite and so that’s my vote.
He certainly has some good songs. About 5-6 that I like, the others aren't really that great IMO. By comparison...Gary Stewart had exactly ONE (number 1 hit) while Conway charted Fifty Five number one hits. Quite a difference. Still....I enjoy listening to both. Stewart was a very troubled person, but more than one Country Artist fits that bill.
