Met my son mid day Friday down on the coast. 6 1/2 hour drive for him. Less than that for me. Traveling light we left both boats at home took a couple Kayaks and a pocketful of lead heads and soft plastics. Fishing with my son is always a good time. He beat me down there and was sitting on go when I drove up.

We slid the kayaks into the sandy green water and had the tide timed just right. The south wind was popping about 20 mph and we had about a mile to paddle into the area we wanted to fish. We had counted on that south wind to blow most of the water out of the marsh. It set the fish up in somewhat predictable locations and kept other fishermen away. We were hoping if we timed the tide right they would bite. The water is still a bit cool so we were wade fishing in our waders. Limit is three redfish each and my son also caught a puppy drum feeding with the redfish. Picture is my son with two limits of slot redfish while I took the picture.

We fished till almost dark and camped on the beach. Puppy drum with butter and Lantana grilled to perfection for dinner. Those puppy drum grill up nicely and are a treat. Got up early Saturday, made coffee and packed up. With the tide out we were able to drive the hard pack and get off the beach early before the Easter crowd showed up.

Thanks y’all. Getting to see my son over the Easter weekend was a blessing. The two of us have shared a lot of good times. As time passes and he grows into more obligation and responsibility, we don’t get many opportunities to get out together. Those of you still raising kids, don’t take that blessing for granted…
deCook. Sorry they are not cooperating. I like fishing that area but we were north of there.

So great for you and you're son. You are so right about how precious these times are with our kids. Even better when you catch some eatin red's!

Did you try South Bay, or mesquite bay on the other side of the old causeway?

I can't wait for 'impulse' trips like this with my boys. Congrats and kudos!

I remember making redezvous trips to the lease with my Dad once I was out of the nest. There was something special about knowing I would beat him to the hunting or fishing grounds and me being ready and waiting on him. As a Dad now, I think I will feel a good deal of pride pulling up on one of my sons all geared up and RTG. Would make me feel like when it was time to pass the torch, all will be ok, because I played a part in raising a boy into a self-sufficient man.

No, we went to SPI on the main road until it turned into sand, then took the Polaris 20 miles more to the cut. Wind is miserable and even worse this morning, so bad that the road was sanding in pretty fast so we got out of there. We're at Harlingen now going up to Corpus. Any recommendation on bait? I was using a popping cork over an artificial shrimp and they wernt having any of it.
