TOI - bullets will tumble after piercing the skin and hut vitals causing a greater wound.

Typical 223 Mil ammo. Fast spin rate causes tumbling when impacting target. Like a tumbling gyro, excess spin energy causes the trajectory to change RAPIDLY when NORMAL trajectory is slightly deviated. Was a design goal for 223 NATO stuff - injure vs kill enemy. So change from 12:1 to 7:1 twist. Solution to non-expanding UN requirement for Mil ammo. Bullet goes straight till it hits something, then goes crazy.

This doesn’t make sense to me. Not sure I am buying what they are selling as there is no way to accurately predict how the bullet will react once hitting its target. Too many variables so bullet could just pencil right thru? Is it velocity dependent or spin rate sensitive just doesn’t seem like a very dependable solution to exactly what problem?

This is one of the things that I geek out about quite a bit. I've watched hours and hours of late nite videos of ballistic gel stuff. Lots of bullets (ones that are very popular) tumble and are consistent at tumbling. There are a ton of those videos on YouTube...check them out, it's very educational. I've even went so far as to consider doing some my own ballistic gel testing...but that pesky thing called time just doesn't fit all this cool stuff in.

The M16 was relatively new when I was in Viet Nam. As I recall, the high-velocity 5.56 "tumbling bullet" that caused great devastation was part of the hype to sell the foot soldier on this new toy rifle.

So change from 12:1 to 7:1 twist. Solution to non-expanding UN requirement for Mil ammo. Bullet goes straight till it hits something, then goes crazy. I always heard the opposite. The slower twist barrels made the bullet barely stable in flight which caused the bullet to tumble at impact. The switch to a faster twist reduced tumbling.

free…don’t think we’re talking about the same thing lol This guy does a lot and he’s firmly against tumbling bullets.

'slower twist barrels made the bullet barely stable in flight' As does too slow a bullet for twist. I've got a target from 40sw of bullets hitting sideways @ 7 yds. It's still a gyro problem. Change a gyro rotational axis and it wants to go 90 degrees to last path. Over-spin and you get enough rotational energy for the bullet to actually change path.

The left believe they all tumble and are very cruel to use the cop-killa bullets
