They actually germinate in the fall and grow slowly through the winter. The plants take off in February ahead of the late-March blooms. I mowed some around the 1st of March and those came back fairly well.

Do deer eat bluebonnets? I know bunnies do. I had also planted some in my garden at home and the bunnies decimated them. I put some chicken wire around a few of them for two years, and they survived, bun never thrived.

I’m putting a small (almost an acre total) orchard and wildflower patch in our side yard for our bees and wildlife in general. Wasn’t able to plant until mid December so missed the bluebonnets. Bluebonnet seeds (about 5-6 lbs) are out but won’t show until next year. Late spring and summer flowers are coming along nicely. Just bought (and in the process of planting)
10 peaches
2 plums
2 pears
2 apples
1 a black cherry
7 dogwoods
6 purple (Texas) sage
7 thornless blackberry
A dozen or so wild dewberries
Some lantana and a purple butterfly bush

Already have 4 figs, 4 grapes, and a dozen wild plums….

The plants…..bought and gathered! I’ll be collecting more this year to add to the patch

I was told that Blue Bonnets run in 1 year, 3 year and 7 year cycles.

I heard three years and that the seeds have to “weather” before they will germinate. Haven’t heard about 7 years but good survival strategy considering fire and drought cycles

635 freeway between I-35 E to DFW airport has a ton of Blue Bonnets growing, not seeing any of my favorite Indian Paint flowers?

That's going to be awesome Jes! We already had some wildflowers but I planted a mix similar to your list. Some only grew on year but others are here to stay, just have to make sure I don't mow until they are all seeded out. Bluebonnets, paintbrush, coneflower, indian blanket, and black-eye susans have done really well in our clay soil. Each does have their year that they flourish more than other years. I never sprayed to fight the grass but you can use Ornamec 170 if needed.

They are all over the place

We have a wildflower area near my walking trail in my subdivision and the soil looks like calachie rocks and the bluebonnets grow strong every year.

Way, WAY back when, my mom ordered some seeds from Burpee (I think). The package said to soak them to soften the shell. Apparently it's pretty hard. Also, it did not work-that pack never resulted in a single plant.

I mowed and bagged my patch last year after the bluebonnet pods started shelling. I littered a pretty good section of bar ditch out by the place with all the clippings. Year one, no plants. We'll see what happens going forward.

I have read they aren't preferred browse, may be possible it was rabbits, even though the cat is hell on them. Our deer are tarted, they eat the wife's roses, come in the yard in the summer to get water out of the dog pool, keep my fruit trees pretty trimmed

Got some maroon Bluebonnet seeds from ATM bookstore a few years ago. They came up the first spring, never saw them again. We used to get a few wild ones, but the der would take care of them pretty quick. Have a couple singles this year, one in my decomposed granite covered parking area.
