I'm looking for someone who is knowledge with Rolex watches. We are trying to determine the fair market value for a Rolex watch that belongs to MIL. My MIL has downsized and moved into a senior living community and as part of her move she is having an estate sale. Her father had a Rolex that she now has but no longer wants and her 3 daughters don't want it either. We know for a fact that it is a Rolex, it's been looked at a certified.

The jeweler that looked at gave my MIL an offer for the watch, but several of us feel that it was a really low ball offer. So, I'm looking for some help to determine the FMV for the watch. Please let me know if you can help or know of anyone that could help.

Thanks

Greg

Year?
Model?
Box?
Papers?

All of the above will effect value.

Most Jewelers are barely a notch above a pawn broker and will lowball you on any price that they quote unless it's what they're asking you to pay them. List it here and you'll probably get a fair offer.

He's right, original box and papers, all things equal, namely condition will yield you 10-20% more, potentially. I have the Blue Submariner, 2000ish model and from my online research since I have box, and papers, most offers should be $1500-2500 more than if I didn't have those

Not totally true, you can buy papers and box on eBay for 150.00. With that being said, if it is still under Rolex warranty then this might be true.

Again, the papers are irrelevant unless under warranty. The receipt is a great memory for you, just brings no value.

have it appraised buy an expert with no skin in the game. It will cost some money but could save you thousands.

I used to take my automatic Omega Seamaster to a guy in Richardson, Coit near 635.

Don't get your hopes up for a windfall though.

Call the main Rolex center in Dallas. They have their main service area there (off Harwood). When I worked for my parents in college, I used to deliver there. That location was amazing with their huge vault they had. Pretty cool place.

I have two of my Rolexes there now, wife’s is ready to pick up, mine will be ready shortly. I dropped them off around the first of March.

Keep in mind you can still walk into the RSC on Harwood until the end of the month. Then after March, everything has to go through a AD or shipped directly to the same RSC in Dallas.

Off interweb,

While there is no fixed rule for determining the value decrease of a Rolex watch without its box and papers, many experts estimate a 10% to 30% reduction in resale value. The exact percentage may vary depending on the model, condition, and market demand.Apr 28, 2023

I just had my 1993 Submariner cleaned, serviced and appraised last summer. It appraised for $16,800 which is what it's insured for. Too be honest I have no idea what I could get for it. With all Rolex’s going up 10% a year which is crazy. Who knows what the market will bring. Certainly not less than a few grand.

The preowned Rolex market has actually been declining over the past year. Difficult to predict, but if you purchased a Rolex maybe 4-5 years ago your head is still above water. No telling what the market will bring in 5 more years, I just know now is probably not the best time to sell.

My motto is “I ain’t selling anyway!”

Thanks for all the feedback,

The watch was manufactured in 1974, we don't have any paperwork or the box. It is an Oyster Perpetual Date Just, Oystersteel and yellow gold. I think I will give the Rolex Center a call.

If you remove the band there should be a serial number on the case.

Here is the phone number.

Off topic..... where would one find a new rolex? Looking for one for the wife, but no new inventory anywhere.

Get to know your local Authorized Dealer and wait.

Or buy Gray (most likely used).

Crown and caliber. (Good used dealer)
Davidsw
Chrono24 ( not recommended) due to fakes on site.

Ladies models are not hard to find like mens. Bachendorf's at Addison Galleria had several about two months back and at Highland Park Village they had one maybe two or three weeks ago.
