I was thinking the difference was whether you wanted to gain a point or not but you beat me to it. Better than most other states, I think. WY you have to have a medical excuse. I turned my AZ coues tag in last year and I got my points back but they kept my $300. That's with the point guard. But I'm glad, I kept my 5 points and gained the 2023 point.

I’ve hunted most of the places mentioned but it’s been a LONG time. I had no idea there was a points system. In the past we just bought out of state licenses and hit the mountains. Glad I got elk, moose, mulies and antelope out of my system.

Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Unfortunately a lot of sheep, moose and goat is out of reach for the common hunter anymore. Sounds like you were hunting out of state in the hay day.

Mine is complex and variable:

Utah/NV. Apply for only awesome units for deer, elk, antelope (long odds). Got over 10 points. Apply for desert sheep tags looking really at the best chance of drawing.

New Mexico - apply for everything some in guide pool some not. New Mexico being random draw you can have lightning strike any year.

Colorado apply for sheep, goat, moose, buy a point for MD 0 points, Elk(20 points)and Antelope 21 points. Colorado point system sucks. A top elk unit can take 25 pints to draw. So literally once in a lifetime hunt.

Montana - the big three sheep, goat moose

Wyoming - pronghorn, moose, elk

South Dakota - deer, bison

Texas - everything with different strategies for each catagory.

I apply in several other states for specific tags and governer tags.

Mine is complex and variable: it’s kinda based on drawing a sheep tag. Most of the other species are just add ons.

Thanks for sharing. I think I am going to start applying in Nevada and yes I know it’s not a good value but hopefully it will be worth it if I draw elk one time in my life. Have you hunted Wyoming Elk before? I am trying to pick out a unit to hunt this year with 5 points.

Look into cow tags to get to know an area before you spend your PPs on a bull tag.
