A Marlin 25MN is a good choice. I had one. For a better piece of wood (and a little more weight), look for the 25MN's older cousin, the Marlin 782 (same action but older with a walnut stock instead of "hardwood").

After selling my 25MN (M for magnum, N for checkered stock) I got me a 783 (same as a 782 but with a tube magazine instead of a removable box magazine).

Here's my 783 with a Vortex scope and medium rings (needed to clear the bolt handle).

That model rifle right there, made me a lot of money back in the 70's, it was my go to caliber and model when I was selling hides.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

That's because the 78X series Marlins are the LAST mass-produced rimfire Marlins with real walnut stocks and were built well before Marlin hit the skids around 2000 (yes I know they didn't sell to Remington until 2010 but they were making garbage for a decade before the sale). I also have a 1951 Marlin 39A "peanut" (walnut) and a 1988 long barrel LSHO Marlin Model 60 ("hardwood").

Pass the gravy.
