Talk about the perfect storm. That Smoke House Creek fire started as a fast moving fire headed east, i 've heard estimates of a mile to two miles wide. Stretched out over a couple of county's, then the front hit and turned it into a 100 plus mile wide fire headed south. Seen an overhead IR video of the front hitting and that line just blew up.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

I've seen fire departments from as far away as New Braunfels responding to these fires. The outpouring of help from fellow Texans, New Mexicans and Oklahomans has been impressive. Thanks folks!

Smokehouse fire is the largest in Texas history, and 2nd largest in US history. Only the 3million acres fore in Maine trumps it.

The Miramichi fire in Maine has held that record since 1825. There was also the Great Fire of 1845 that burned 1.5M acres.

Fight from the black with the wind at your back.

But it's probably moving too fast for them to get a handle on it.

I feel for the farmers, ranchers, and the Firefighters. This is a terrible ordeal for all of them!

A lot depends on wind speed. About 30 to 40 years ago, a neighbor was burning some trash on a very windy day. It got away from him and hit my place. Looked grim. But, the following spring, the trees and grasses came back. Within a couple of years everything was back.

Hope it happens there.

Where are y'all sending your donations? I know there are a bunch, but which is the one which 100% will go to survivors, livestock feed, vet costs, fence material.

The land has never been the problem. As a matter of fact, fire is good for the land. It is the cattle, fences, stored feed/hay, oilfield equipment, buildings and lives that don't make out so well.

My problem is, what I can donate is cash money. That requires a whole lot of trust to whom I give it to.

I'm personally delivering a ton of cattle cubes and as many cases of water as I can get into the back seat of my truck tomorrow. Will be taking them straight to the donation drop site in Pampa. If anyone wants to help with this PM me, I'll make for damn sure this get to the source of the need.

For those wondering, the snow/sleet wasn't even enough to get our trucks stuck . We had new initial attacks today , and the weather wasn't favorable for fire growth ( that should be a sign ). I believe that tomorrow and Sunday the fire activity will be very high .

Fire was moved to a type 1 incident yesterday, its federal now so alot of stuff changes.

If you guys have any specific questions I will do my best to answer them .

JG the spot fires were over a mile , so wind to your back would make ya crisp .

I have nephews from Oregon who are USFS Hot Shots. I wonder if they'll get the call. The fire weather forecast for today and tomorrow is awful, with potential single-digit humidities along with the wind.
