Are they able to do aerial attacks? Can’t imagine there’s very big lakes to get water from up that way.

Be safe

I don’t remember the exact calculations but it takes about a foot of snow to equal 1” of rain. I don’t see the snow doing much of anything to help.

Snow doesent burn. It’s not the same moisture content as rain but it’s definitely gonna help

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Correct, but the most you can get out of a light snow fall and wildfire is a higher atmospheric humidity. The smaller particles of moisture frozen to be called snow are way to small and melt and evaporate before it even reaches ground. I have been around way too many campfires when it was snowing to know snow rarely makes any difference...rain is the fire killer. The only type of snow that would give enough moisture to help a wild fire would be found in the really heavy big flake wet snow that makes great snowball packing, and even then it has to be coming down heavy, so heavy that it would hinder rescue efforts. It still would not likely stop a raging wild fire like we have but would likely slow it enough that things could be contained better.

I saw a big forest fire in New Mexico come down a mountain just after dark one, it was one of the most amazing things I’ve ever seen. It moves so fast it almost seems unreal.

Add in a little wind and fires can rip.

Long time ago my at my ex brother inlaws place he had one huge tank about 8-10 acres that drained into a smaller one about two acres, they had caliche roads around them both. On the dam of the bigger one above had tall thick Johnson grass that was all the way down into the water, the backside all the way to the smaller tank was almost as bad.
It was a beautiful day with very light winds that would direct the fire towards the water, it had previously rained a lot of rain so it seemed like a great time to burn to me.

I said lets do a control burn on this, the conditions could not be better IMO, he said no for he was afraid that much fire might create its own wind and jump to the pasture and beyond.
Never heard of a fire creating its own wind until then, have heard about it afterwards too.

" In the case of wildfires, the air is much warmer, so it rises rapidly. The rapidly rising air creates a vacuum at the surface near the fire, so air from around the fire gets rapidly pulled in to fill the void, according to Duffey. This is how fires create their own wind."

Largest wildfire in Texas history explodes to more than 1 million acres in 4 days across Panhandle

A weak area of low pressure swinging through the Texas wildfire zones dumped some beneficial snow on Thursday amid freezing temperatures. As of late Thursday morning, the National Weather Service reported 2.5 inches of snow had fallen about 3 miles to the north of Amarillo. It's a welcome relief from the hot, dry and windy conditions that led to the explosive development of several wildfires burning through dry vegetation.

STINNETT, Texas – A massive wildfire that has exploded to more than 1 million acres of land in just four days in the Texas Panhandle has now become the largest wildfire in state history as firefighters continue their desperate attempts to contain the blaze.

Crews working to extinguish the Smokehouse Creek Fire, as well as others across the region, were hoping to get a brief – and rather bizarre – wintry assist from the weather on Thursday as a blanket of snow fell across the area.

Rain is helpful, but when it comes to fire, snow is perfect," FOX Weather Meteorologist Britta Merwin said. "Think about taking a fire extinguisher to snuff out a fire – this is the same effect. It dampens (the area) and that can really tap out a fire."

Unfortunately, the storm system will have little to no effect on the expansive fires except to keep humidity elevated for a day.

Five major wildfires in the Texas Panhandle have consumed over 1.25 million acres, prompting evacuations, road closures and emergency declarations. The largest fire burning remains the Smokehouse Creek Fire north of Stinnett, with only 3% containment.
