Jennifer Crumbley found guilty of involuntary manslaughter in Oxford High School shooting

Quote
After 11 hours of deliberations in a landmark school shooting case, an Oakland County jury found Jennifer Crumbley guilty on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, concluding she is responsible for the deaths of four students murdered by her son in the 2021 massacre at Oxford High School.

The case is the first time in America that prosecutors have sought to hold a parent criminally responsible for a school shooting carried out by their child.

As the jury forewoman, a hair stylist who had vowed to be fair and impartial, read the guilty verdicts one by one, Crumbley showed no emotion, but kept her head lowered, eyes closed and lips pursed.......

Having watched a lot of the case, they apparently left several guns out and readily available for the kid to access. While I don't 100% agree with it, they should have done better as parents keeping those guns safe.

Maybe they should have taken a more responsible approach with the gun issue, but if the parents are held more responsible in regard to smaller things going sideways, like school grades, discipline in school, criminal mischief, etc., then maybe big issues like shooting someone would never show up. Just saying parents should be held responsible long before it gets to gun control.

The father is set to go on trial as well. They decided to do separate trials for some reason so it doesn’t set well for the father with the out come of the mother’s trial.

Glad my parents weren’t held liable for my actions.

I think this is BS

I mean, I could see some form of negligence charge for leaving the firearms accessible to a minor (negligent entrustment maybe?).. but charging the parent for any form of homicide strikes me as wrong.

There is a young man at my daughter’s former school that broke a teachers arm, has attacked multiple teachers over the past two years, still in school. Has done other terrible things I know of as well. I pulled my kids out of that school, we homeschool them now. The kid is nearly untouchable, and there is only one reason he can get away with it, he is “under privileged”.

There is a lot going on behind closed doors that they try to hide from us. It does not excuse anyone for shooting up the school and killing innocents, but what the heck is going on?

Thankfully, a jury decision doesn’t set precedent.

The kid should have gotten mental help, parents paid NO attention and IMHO are 'pretty nutty themselves'.

I'd normally be really worried about this as precedent, but in this case it actually makes sense reading the details. The kid had TONS of problems, has made aggressive/threatening comments about hurting people at school, and the parents STILL bought him a gun as a present and left others unattended at home. I'm all for gun rights and for personal responsibility, but in this case parents have a responsibility to not provide a gun to a minor that is a known threat, and if they choose to arm him they have some culpability in what he does with it. That's just common sense.

15 (almost 16), love to hunt with my aunt and uncle, shop with my mom, and watch college football with my dad. Don't have a lot of girls to talk hunting with at school (haha) so I joined this forum smile

Parents should be held accountable for their children's actions long before letting them possess a gun. This case reminds me more of gang members providing weapons for other gang members rather than the actions of a parent and child.

I cant image why Parents would want their tax money back in the form of a school vouchers to put their kids into Private schools

Zero sympathy for them! No parenting skills whatsoever.

If the case makes its way up to the United States Supreme Court, it will be tossed. Little chance that the current USSC will allow a completely non-involved party to be held liable for a murder carried about by someone else - even if it was their kid.

This is a HORRIBLE precedent to set. Just think about where this line of reasoning ultimately leads...

Next, parents will be prosecuted when their kid gets into a wreck and kills someone ... because they knew or should have known that their kid was a bad driver ... or in the case where it was a DUI, they knew or should have known their kid drank alcohol... Or maybe they are liable for the sheer fact that they bought the car for the kid.

Absolute garbage opinion that will lead to a whole new string of innocent people being prosecuted for the acts of others. The sad thing is, these parents (and I don't care if they are [censored] parents or not) will now have to endure punishment for years and years while this nonsense makes its way through all the appeals process and up to the USSC... hopefully they either have the resources to afford it or have an organization jump in and pay for it/take care of the litigation ... because this case NEEDs USSC review and needs to be tossed. But if they don't have the money and/or an organization doesn't pick it up... guess this crazy [censored] will stand.
