I haven't seen many Texas quail reports on here this season. I'm curious how everyones season is going?

This is only my fifth year quail hunting and by far my best. My buddy has a lease in South Texas that has been really good. We had a few good trips down there already. Last Saturday we were on birds the entire day. We also had a decent trip to my lease in Sterling county. For comparison I only found one covey the past two seasons out there. Looking forward to another trip or two out there before the season is over.

I'm sure it's nothing for those of you who hunted the good old days of quail hunting. For me it has been really encouraging. I was beginning to question all the money and time I invested in the sport. You also feel bad for the dogs when you hunt all day and are lucky to find a covey or two. I'm really thankful for the improvements this year and praying for more rain and birds next year!

An excellent year at my place in Dickens county. Own the place of 160 acres for 13 years and generally only a few quail each year, a covey or 2, 5 years ago had about 8 coveys on the place and had a blast. This year have identified 6 coveys of 15 to 20 birds. Have had several excellent hunts since deer season ended, Unfortunately only have limited free time in the coming month.

Zack, that's the destiny of the quail hunter.
In years when the hunting is good, it's magical. Dogs on point, the world around you stands still. Oxner used to say "the whole world stops".

Good years come and go. There's more off and bad years than good. Mr. Bob is a fragile creature.
Great dogs live in our lives for a few years, their memories live forever there.

We are the eternal optimists. Next year will be better if we can just get the right rains....or better conditions, or better hatches.

It's a fabulous sport, pursed by those of kindred spirit.
The reward is not in the showing, it's in the coming and the going.

Best of luck to you.

We have them at our feeders. Numbers are increasing slowly....not enough that I want to hunt them yet.

I was somewhere near my house when I heard one this last spring. First bird I heard in about 15 years.

Very slow in noodle this year. (Jones county) 3-5 coveys a day on a good day
We have more than last few years in Dickens but still not great.

In Dickens county it has been very good. Best I’ve seen in 8-10 years.

Did Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, Kansas, and different areas of the panhandle this year. All solid to good hunts.

The cover in the panhandle was thick, scenting conditions were tough early, covey sizes were good, and we averaged about a covey about every 40 minutes. Think best day was 13 coveys (timing was so so with mostly warm weather or raining except for one out of six days of hunting). Encouraged about carryover up there.

Few pics from last weekend's closer hunt:

Areas of Dickens County definitely has more birds than the last 2 -3 years, but it is far from a great year. There is a small strip that got rain at just the right time. 20 miles three directions and the rain did not come.

We hunted yesterday with 8 dogs and moved two coveys.

We all need to practice Whoa more.

Was fishing a creek on Granger WMA yesterday morning, heard one calling but never a report back. Been 8 or 9 years since I even heard anything. Sure was a pretty sound!!!!
