Got a hold of some of the new 62gr ELD-VT bullets and loaded them up with a few different powders in the 22 Creedmoor.
From 20 inch barrel was easily running 3530 fps on the Garmin
Swapped to 26 inch barrel and cruising at 3700+ and could probably go a tad faster but worried about spinning these screamers apart.


The best part is they shoot too. This does add a new level to flat shooting with good BC.
These groups are using a ladder of charges as well.


I am literally walking out the door to go coyote collecting. So hopefully get to try them on something beside paper.

That should do it! the 3 in a ragged hole in a ladder test pretty much says node. At that velocity it should do well on the coyotes or anything else that size and down.

DStroud, that's impressive. After looking at some data I have a question. It looks to me like the 22CM and 22-243 Middlestead have very similar ballistics. What is the advantage of one over the other?

Factory brass…specifically, I’m a fan of the srp. I was going to do a 22x47 up until Alpha released brass. Clearly the only thing I hate worse than a Gaymoor is brass prep

My 22 Gaymoor is fast becoming my favorite rifle. It’s light, 6lb 5oz before optics and suppressor, shoots amazing and there is so little recoil you can see stuff fall in the scope. This and the 6 are what Hornady should’ve lead with out of the gate

Judd pretty much nailed it. Why fireform 243 or for that matter 22-250 or any of the other similar cartridges when there is 4 companies making 22 Creedmoor brass.
It’s available in SRP and LRP and very high quality brass in multiple brands versus say 243 which there is just Lapua.
I have folks tell me hey I will just put a fast twist barrel on my 220 Swift and it’s just as good.
Point me to all that great brass available for it….

So just how flat is that with a 100:yard 0?

Awsome! I freaking love fast 22s. My first real long range-ish rifle was a 22-250. I do one day want something like what you have.

What powders did you try and which one did you settle on?

I had planned to keep that info to myself but then my wife who is on Facebook shows me a post on 22 Creedmoor page that the above pictures and powder I used were posted.

Anyway at this point I have tried Superformance/ 4000 MR / Reloder 15.5 and both 4000MR and Reloder 15.5 are right together in performance. Those two groups pictured are both powders.
I chose to use Reloder 15.5 for now because that was in my AutoTrickler V3 as I just finished some 6mm GT’s.
I do think based on past experience Staball 6.5 would do quite well also speed wise.

Oh they are fast...Mine is a 20" barrel and pushing an 80.5 Berger 3200fps...I ranged a deer at 180y and my binos said .5 moa. I thought no way that's right and pulled up my shooter app, yep, that's right...it's a beast. Exactly why I said this is the Gaymoor that Hornady should've led with, it's impressive.

My 20" 6 Gaymoor shoots 105 hybrids at 3k...hits like a freight train and I wouldn't hesitate using it on any deer within normal hunting ranges

Then there is the 6.5 slowmor....but it's the one that got all this goodness started.

I tested some 62 gr Lehigh defense controlled chaos out of my 18” 22 creed today. I was using varget and tested in half grain increments from 38.5 to 40.5 grains. Five shot group averages ranged from 3,421 to 3,601 FPS. I was pretty pleased with the velocities but groups were crap. Ranged from 1.5 to 1.9” at 100 yds.. This rifle was shooting .5 to .75” at 100yd with 80 gr eldm.

Just an update for anyone interested in the 62 ELD-VT bullet performance.
Have now shot this particular load in 5 different 22 Creedmoors all have shot VERY well as far as groups go.
Reason for this post is to let folks know field performance with a few critters shot with this bullet. It smacks coyotes and other predators really well and for people shooting Thermal at night at just predators helps as it’s very flat shooting out to 300yds BUT here is the rub. It doesn’t penetrate very well on tougher animals like hogs.


This one absorbed a half dozen shots while trotting across an open field at about 225 yds and was finally dispatched after we chased it down a few minutes later with a head shot.
I think between just being a tough old boar ( weighing 277) and the mud the bullets never really got to vitals.
So maybe not a good choice for anything bigger than coyotes from what I have seen so far.

That’s the kind of info I was hoping to get.

Not too surprised with those results on the big critters. Get up to some of the 75gr and heavier bullets will work better on large critters with their higher sectional density.

One I used on deer and hogs that definitely holds together for penetration and never recovered from critters up to 150lbs is the 75gr Swift Sirocco, not cheap but works. one that stayed in the hog but I didn't look for was a frontal head shot on a 180ish pound boar but I was not going to look through that mess for the bullet.

80gr Nosler RDX makes a big mess of coyotes but not a good choice for hogs IMO. At 223Rem speeds the 75gr A-Max worked well on hogs but never tried it from the 22-243.

i haven't tried the Sierra bullet that is getting a lot of talk yet on big critters but bet it would be good.

From Hornady I would be looking at the new 80gr ELD-X for the bigger critters.
