Anybody use a shipping container as your hunting camp, how did you modify it. Roughly how much did it cost, are you happy with it.

Does anyone know somebody that has one, or places to get them?

got to the outdoor forum on ar15.com, the survival section had a few guys make things out of them. they should be able to direct you.

There is a place that sells them on Hwy 380. I think it is between Jacksboro and Bryson. I will try to remember to write the number down when I go to my lease in Graham next weekend.

I'm needing them down around San Antonio but thanks, do you have any pictures of what you or your customers have done...I found a place that will deliver for free and I might start with a 20 ft for storage this year. They've had some "passer-bys" down there, nothing on the ranch to mess with right now though.

Well it looks like I'm going to try building one myself, heard back from square1...little steep for my taste, send me a quote for a 40ft delivered to 76063. What type of mods do you guys do? After I'm done building it I would need it delivered to south texas, 6 hours...about how much would that run?

There is a place on Loop 410 near I-10 on the east side of San Antonio that sells them. I have no idea on price. We use one for storage at our lease, but got it at a place close to Austin.

Yea I saw them the last time I went down, there is a place on SA CL that has free delivery, might be the same. Probably get a 20ft for storage and build the camp house over the next year.

Just hope you never have a fire between your bed and the door.

Any port on the coast will have stacks of them for sale much cheaper than inland. Especially Houston.

Fire or no fire you should have a regular door cut into the other end. Wouldn't want someone coming up and locking you in from the outside either.

I'll cut out several doors on the side. It doesn't look too hard to modify, nothing a welder and a cutting torch can't handle!

Actually these can be very dangerous from that perspective. A high wind can slam the door shut on these things, and if the dog ear latches catch, you're SCREWED. (happen to me once... still have nightmares and could have died) DO NOT spend significant time in one of these containers until you've cut an alternate exit that can't be locked.

They really suck to weld on. They are real easy to blow out holes in the weld. Have lots of gap rod handy. Or a MIG.

Yea I've got a wire welder and if I get it set right, it's hard to screw up!

I have been entertaining the idea of a container camp for a few years now. I just never had the time or motovation to do it. Now I have time and some motovation, but no cash.

Out in the desert in California people are making houses out of these things. Like a modular home.

don't you think that thing will cost a lot in finishing out? insulation etc

Great advice above....

to recap my experience...

1. you must cut another door for safety and the locking doors in the wind thing, yes a long shot but you are screwed in a fire.

2. A flux core or MIG welder is best...dont stick weld them.

3. The weigh a lot, about 6000 lbs for a 40 foot one and thats with minimal outfitting. Moving is not trivial.

4. My design includes a mud room on the big door end. I build a wall several feet inside and put a door in that wall. Then we pin the steel doors back all weekend. The mud room is where we lock up the generator and anything else we leave there including a ATV.

5. Seal up the gap underneath from snakes etc.

6. Dont go crazy with insulation, say R5 is plenty. It is a small space and heating it up is easy. More insulation than that is a waste.

7. They are sucure if you put plates or bars on the windows while away. This is a big issue in South Texas. I perfer plates on windows and bars over doors.

8. Twenty foot units are fine for a kids rooms or storage but its a waste of time as a cabin unless you are solo or you and missus...

9. I like flourescent lights, since they are cool...not generating a lot of heat.

10. One window unit in each end seems to do the trick. Size depends on where you are....bigger in far south texas or smaller in far west...

11. cost to finish out is in the eye of the beholder. some guys spend weeks in one notch better than cardboard shacks and are happy. Some want a sofa and sat dish. You can do anything to a container.

12. buy a 40 foot if primary quarters and get the tall one, for the extra foot of head room. Well worth it.

I like everything that is being tossed around so far, I have wanted one for a long time for storage on our river place. Building quarters looks like a great project.

I have two on my place for storage and for this exact reason I welded a 4 inch chain and hook on the bottom of the door on the inside. When I open it I always take the chain off the hook and let it hang down to keep the door from slamming shut and catching the latch. When I leave just put the 4 inch chain on the hook to close. Works like a charm and you never have to worry about being trapped.

You can pick up a 20-40' container from Ritchie Brothers Auction in Houston,Texas!!! Just bring a trailer, a low boy/flat bed gooseneck would be best and they will load it for you! I've seen them being bought for $200 and up!!! It all depends on what you want as far as size, Condition of the container, etc.. I believe that would be your best bet!!! Have someone with an appropriate trailer and truck go with you and pay their gas, buy them lunch and you got yourself a dandy lil camp for around $200-$400!!! Btw, a good clean and pretty good looking container may run you about $400-$600 or $200 for one that may need a little welding, doors, etc...

It was a while back(over a year ago I think) but someone posted some pics on this forum of a shipping container being made into a home. Yeah, that's right not a camp....a home is what it looked like to me. It was pretty amazing and it was obvious that their intention was to be permanent when they set it up. I really do think you can do just about anything with one of those container as long as you got the skills and the money.

A lot of people make shipping containers into homes these days.

Mostly hippies and Longhorns, but it's done pretty regularly.

So does anyone know what one around the S.A. area costs and how much per mile to deliver?
