We’re cleaning out Dad’s place and found a bowl he has coveted all our lives. His story is that he and our great granddad dug this thing out of a creekbed “near Robert Lee” in 1954. Part of the lip is polished making it seem used over time. There’s also some unusual markings on the bottom.

Anyone have any idea the origin of this thing or have any ideas who might know more about it? Thanks for any help!!

J.R.

Looks like a grinding bowl. Find a college with a Archaeology dept and they will be able to tell you a lot about it. Whatever it is its very cool.

Definitely a grinding bowl, but never seen one with a pedestal base like that. Very unique. I know a couple archeologists that specialize in Texas tribes. Going to send them this link.

Seems like I saw somewhere that those were used by native tribes to ground up corn.

My hunting buddy has rocks on his ranch the size of small cars that they ground large indentions into. They are next to a natural spring that never dries out.

With that base, I wonder if it was designed to be held between the legs while grinding.

If the drawings are carved in they are petroglyphs. Several thousand years old. If they are carved in rather than drawn on. You can sprits it with water and they will be more easily seen for an image. If they are drawn on, I wouldn’t want to get it wet though. That would be for an expert on the topic.

My granddad found one similar to this one years ago on a tributary of the Colorado River. He told me if you can identify stream crossings you can find things like this, usually falls off a wagon and don't realize it. Very cool find though.

We had the same thing next to a creek on the property I grew up on. Rocks about waste high, flat on top, with several bowls carved out. I wish I had pics.

JR sending you a PM. I’ve got an archeologist that has some questions. I think she may be a good resource for you.
