Looking at the spike this month we are in for even a worse surprise.

Went through similar thing ourselves in Dec., Atmos Gas was like 2-3 times normal. I called their customer service and they pointed me to the fact that Dec. usage paid in Jan. was like half of last few years. They indicated either someone fat fingered the usage amounts and was corrected with Jan.'s bill or the reading was incorrect in Dec. and fixed with Jan. bill. Both seemed plausible and I will continue to see monitor amount usage and cost going forward.

We have a heat pump, spray foam, vinyl windows, etc. and our electric bill was a little over double after this recent freeze. We've had similar bills after hard freezes before. Oddly, our summer bills don't vary much whether it is 95 or 105 degrees. That may be due to the attic spray foam.

my 2 furnaces run on propane and it was $2.60 a gallon to fill it up last week. The electric bill was $183 and thats on 3,000 sq ft home. I have no way to really calculate the propane in to the electric bill to get an amount it would be if i ran all electric. It was $390 to fill the propane tank and that usually lasts 2 months or little more in the winter. But our water heater, stove/oven, clothes dryer also run on propane.

I also run a 30x40 shop on the same meter and i have a freezer, fridge, and 2 mini split units in the shop and it stayed warm in there during the freeze.

I noticed the same thing with the Feb bill. I haven't looked at the specifics in the bill as it's auto drawn and I got the email saying it was going to be drawn.

The January bill came before MLK weekend when it got really cold for us, we pretty much ran the fire place all day for 4 days in a row. The Feb bill will be a doozy.

$335 thru Jan 15th.

I think both upstairs an downstairs were on 24/7 during the last cold snap

I also had my gas fireplace going like 5 days straight in my bedroom

I'm on a heat pump (all electric house) we used more KWH that week then we did the entire rest of the month. That week 2.1x our electricity bill.

Just got my bill today. $112.16 and that is in Montana. Something is up down there it seems.

Just asked my best friend about his...he bought his first house and the heater and water heater are gas. It was $112 last month and $130 this month. Good thing I asked. He thought it was on autopay, but it wasn't...and it was late the day I asked him.

He's on Atmos in Fort Worth.

My usage goes way up in Dec, Jan, and Feb, so my January -March bills are typically much higher than the rest of the year. During the other 9 months, by bill is usually only $40ish, but can get $300 plus for winter months.

I know a lot of folks brag on gas being more efficient/cheaper, but my all electric house electric bill is less than just your gas bill for all but Nov.

But it was different than a typical gas bill before a hostile idealog executive administration was installed in 2020.

Many probably know this, but gas central heating units have efficiency ratings similar to SEER for air conditioning. Since I quit building I don't know what is available now. I just remember being able to offer units from about 70% efficiency up to over 95%. The tell tail sign was the exhaust pipe out the roof. It would either be multiple walled pipe or PVC. No guesswork on which one sent the most heat out vs. keeping it in.

Personally I'll take the heat pump. Vent-free gas logs are nice and cozy as well.

No clue because I never look at our bills, the wife handles everything. The only time she mentions the bills is if they go crazy up or down, very rarely will she mention the dollar amount.

Gas meters do not measure how much gas you consume by weight and energy delivered comes from the weight of the gas. They measure the volume of the gas through a Bellows and Ratchet mechanism. Gas pressure going to your appliances needs to be 10.5 in of water column max. The meters are calibrated for 10.5 in of water column but almost all of them have pressure regulators that drop it to five and a half to six inches of water column. Get yourself a manometer and adjust the pressure regulator going into your meter to 10.5 in of water column and your gas bill will go down because you will actually get the weight of gas that you're being billed for.

Edit: Some newer neighborhoods are plumbed for what is called high pressure gas and the pressure going into your house is about 2 psi and the pressure gets dropped down by a regulator at the distribution manifold. The principal is still the same but the change won't be a significant.

Gas is much more efficent

I’m sure lots of things come into play. I don’t have a big house, only around 2000 SF. We have a new high efficiency heat pump so I’m sure that helps. Just over the years have failed to see the massive difference in expenses. In college we lived in a single wide one of my buddies lived next door. We were all electric he was gas. His electric bill was less, but combined electric/gas I think he always came out on the loosing end.

Our electric and nat gas bills were up about 35%. . I would have look but if remember correctly they were about $250 combined.

Cost comparison electric vs propane question was asked at the coffee shop recently.

It is hard to calculate electric strip heat and propane heat. Electricity is sold by the KWH. Nat gas is sold by the cubic foot. Propane is sold by the gallon. One must calculate the BTU content per dollar for each heat source. Based on $2.60 gal of propane and my actual costs of electric power and nat gas including delivery fees and taxes, the cost compered as this.

A dollars worth of electric strip heat is the base line.
The same amont of propane heat would cost $0.60.
The same amout of nat gas heat would cost $0.40.

A late model heat pump system would be slightly higher than nat gas..... depends on set point and and how many days the outdoor ambient is below 40 degrees. Above 40 degrees, a late model heat pump will beat nat gas. Below 40 degrees the need for auxiliary strip heat to maintain a 70 degree set point adds to operating cost.

Ours was $516 this month, the highest by far it has ever been!
