It seems that the times that I hunted while it was raining, the ducks just dont move much. Or did they vacate? What do you guys think?

Ive heard for years that hunting in dreary foggy weather "Duck hunting weather" is best. I find that not the case in my opinion. I'd much rather hunt a cold blue day any day.

Absolutely. And you can hide in the shadows, and easily make your own shadows. This is my favorite trick...Just putting a shadow on your face makes a huge difference in hiding from them ducks.

I shot a limit of wood ducks, gadwall and mallards on Tuesday in the rain. I don't mind hunting in the rain, have the gear to stay dry. But it's a PITA to get every dried out and ready to for the next hunt. If it's lightening or pouring down rain i sleep in, if it's a light rain or mist I normally go.

I'll hunt rain if I had a planned trip. If I know its going to rain and be foggy ahead of time, I won't plan it. My two biggest worries now are wind and fog. When I leave Port O'Connor to go to the island, I have to cross two shipping lanes. if the boat died as I crossed one of the shipping lanes that could be a death sentence. The big ships don't have brakes and would just have to run right over you. They probably wouldn't even know they just ran you over if it was foggy. The last time we go into a fog I stayed well away from the shipping lane. I set a compass to take me directly to the south shore to where I could turn east upon hitting the shore. I couldn't see the shore but knew it was there because we ran so shallow. Once I got to the shipping lane, I stopped the boat and killed the engine. We both listened for quite a while until we were sure there was nothing coming. Once I fired up I scooted across the lane as fast as I could. I don't like it!

Light rain, yes. Heavy rain, not so much. I hunted Fri and the rain was a LOT heavier and earlier than expected. Every time it would slack off a bit we'd get a group or two in. I do like how it made them trickle in.

I did have a first on that hunt. It started hailing on us for about 15 minutes. Small, but definitely gets your attention.

Sunny cold crisp days are my favorite to hunt. But I go regardless of the weather. Heck, the clothing is so much better now than when I started in the 70’s, staying warm and dry is easier than ever.
