Picked up a 4 boxes of this a year ago. Haven't shot the 270 in a while and am looking for some feedback if your typical factory Rem 700 SS 24" barrel (I think 1-10 twist) will benefit from this heavier bullet.

Been thinking about moving this 270 and sticking with the 308 and 7-08 that I already have... unless this bullet will put the 270 into another category and do something the other two can't do.

Unless you are getting pretty specific none of the 3 are going to do much the others won’t. I’ve been well pleased with the ELDX and the 270. Like my 7mm08 too.

The eldx is a fine bullet, but it's not magical. It's not going to move a .270 into a different category. 2cents

What are you needing the .270 Win to do differently?

I have a similar thought sometimes. I have a 270, 7mm08, and. 30-06. The overlap in capability bugs me, but for sentimental etc. reasons I’ll probably never sell any of them. I decided to load them different. The 7mm08 is set up with high bc heavy for cal modern bullet. The 30-06 is set up with a big round nose, and I’m going to load the 270 with some 95 grain TTSX when I run out of my current loadings. They still all hunt kill and shoot great but are a little something different.

If you want a tough bullet with a high BC (high for a 270, that is), the 145 ELD-X is the top option. It hits hard and is the best long range projectile for the 270 (.277") options. I've turned in some VERY impressive groups out of hunting rifles in 270 Win with my ammo. I couldn't tell you about factory ammo.

I have shot two Colorado Bull elk with the 145’s and one dropped in tracks the other ran about 40 yds and piled up. Both were shot a tad over 300 yds away.

It's the odd rifle out of the group I have. We have 2x 308's and 2x 7-08's so I've got all the family outfitted.

Don't really need the 270 anymore. The Elk and Nilgai hunt's my boys did were with 308's. Just looking to see if that bullet pushed the 270 into an area above what I can accomplish with the 308 or 7-08.

Have been meaning to try the 145’s but don’t shoot my 270 as much any more. With the 26 inch barrel I bet I can get them between 3150-3200 fps. It hangs better than I would expect.

Chad,
I know I've had discussions with you about the 308's capability. Just curious if the 308 options fall short where the 270 would excel. Don't anticipate us doing anything other than the typical NA stuff. Elk and Nilgai would be the biggest stuff for us.

It is a fantastic factory load. Groups even better than the 130 and 140 SST. It is what I put in both of my 270's,

Are you handloading those 145s or did you get the factory Hornady Precision Hunter ammo with the 145s??

Have any of you put this head to head with the Berger Hybrid Hunter 140 that Federal loads? BC is pretty close.

Their precision hunter ammo is a very solid option especially for normal deer hunting distances-- velocity is close to adverstised and the accuracy I've seen across a wide range of cartridges has been really good (7-08, .308, 30/06, 300wm, 270win).

Here's a apples to apples breakdown of precision hunter ammo (270win, 7-08, .308) to see the differences.

BLUF: A better comparison is the .270win running with a 6.5prc until you pass 600yds (with specified factory ammo). When you compare the .270 to 7-08 and .308 its starting and staying faster and delivering more energy but the differences aren't wild or earth shattering. The velocity differences could affect bullet performance BUT- not at normal deer hunting differences. The biggest difference is the drops, starting at 400y the .270 really pulls away and by 800y its 20" flatter than 7-08 and 4 FEET flatter than a .308. Again-- referring back to standard hunting distances for a whitetail any of them will get it done, but the 270win can be a longer range option from a 10" twist factory gun than most would believe.

Used factory numbers for MV, bullet length, BC- ran through LRBC, set at 100y zero

270win (Hornady Precision 145eldx)- 2970fps MV

Range / Velocity / Energy / MOA drop

100y- 2809 fps, 2540 ft/lbs, 0 moa
200y- 2652 fps, 2264 ft/lbs, 1.4 moa
400y- 2353 fps, 1782 ft/lbs, 5.8 moa
600y- 2073 fps, 1383 ft/lbs, 11.3 moa
800y- 1812 fps, 1057 ft/lbs, 17.9 moa

7-08 (Hornady Precision 150eldx)- 2770fps MV

Range / Velocity / Energy / MOA drop

100y- 2625 fps, 2295 ft/lbs, 0 moa
200y- 2483 fps, 2053 ft/lbs, 1.7 moa
400y- 2214 fps, 1632 ft/lbs, 6.8 moa
600y- 1960 fps, 1279 ft/lbs, 13 moa
800y- 1723 fps, 989 ft/lbs, 20.4 moa

.308 (Hornady Precision 178eldx)- 2600fps MV

Range / Velocity / Energy / MOA drop

100y- 2454 fps, 2380 ft/lbs, 0 moa
200y- 2312 fps, 2112 ft/lbs, 2 moa
400y- 2043 fps, 1649 ft/lbs, 8 moa
600y- 1791 fps, 1268 ft/lbs, 15.2 moa
800y- 1556 fps, 957 ft/lbs, 24.1 moa

6.5PRC (Hornady Precision 143eldx)- 2960fps MV

100y- 2822 fps, 2528 ft/lbs, 0 moa
200y- 2687 fps, 2292 ft/lbs, 1.4 moa
400y- 2428 fps, 1872 ft/lbs, 5.6 moa
600y- 2183 fps, 1354 ft/lbs, 10.8 moa
800y- 1951 fps, 1208 ft/lbs, 16.9 moa

Thx Duckhunter... some good data that's easy to digest.

It also points out that, with me not planning on taking any shots beyond 400 yards... they are all pretty close.
