Had to come home for possession limit. 1 hen. Momarsh does great on ice, it goes right up on the ice, and if it breaks I’m good, that motor does the rest very easy. If ice doesn’t break, backing up and turning around is easy without having to get out of the boat.

I gave the spoonies a pass… good time to work on your dog to hold steady, not creep or even move.

On a side note, do you not clean your birds daily while on trips. I don't do many multi-day trips, but when I do I've always cleaned the birds daily and kept the carcass for proof if needed. Obviously it's been cold enough the past few days you don't have to worry about the mear spoiling. Do you use toe tags on your birds. Mainly curious if a game warden has ever given you any troubles over this. I could see if GW wanted to be a prick he could allege you shot over your bag limit.

FYI, “cleaning your birds and keeping the carcass” is not legal. If your not at your home and you clean them the full breast have to be left intact with one attached wing. A federal warden will go by the law as it is written.

Either keep them uncleaned till final destination or wing attached.

What Mo said, it’s easier to just keep them whole, on ice, clean them when you get home (I do the same thing dove hunting). I bag them in zip lock bags, date them, and take photos, clean them when I get home. I showed a GW one time my iPhone and what I shot daily, he was fine with that, and appreciated me handing him my iPhone and letting him thumb thru my photos. I don’t worry about it all too much, GWs have always been nice to me, if one makes trouble I guess that’s a risk of hunting we all take.

This is an easy way to cut them, will give you more room in the ice chest.

Tara punching through ice on a retrieve, you can hear her crying for me to release her. I was holding her back, accessing if it was safe to send her. The girl is a firecracker…

Congrats. The picture idea is a good one. I'll use that in the future. I have, in the past, hung whole birds for a few days before I pluck and draw. I'm quit doing that as I have missed some with pellets in the guts. Now I pluck just enough to draw them and hang them that way.

My dog had a seizure Saturday. 10 retrieves you could tell she was zapped I said she’s done guys. She started whining continuously think it was “I’m cold” she followed me to the waters edge getting decoys. When I went back up and she did not follow me up. My buddy carried her up and said I think you’re carrying her out. I gave her a piece of candy out of a blind bag to get her blood sugar up then I picked her up to start towards the truck and she locked up and started into a seizure. Scared me pretty good. I pulled off her vest which was working properly she was dry as could be on her chest. (Kudos to Ira on that design) then started rubbing her and trying to warm her up. She came out of it and I carried her about half way to the truck and she started getting squirmy, put her down and she’s acted like a crazy lab since.

I assume it was exhaustion from breaking ice on about every retrieve and cold. For record she’s only 40 lbs soaking wet. No fat, little thing. Breaking that ice was probably tougher on her

Sorry to hear about that ducknbsss, I assume your dog is ok now? Was your dog out of the water between retrieves? Thats very important. Was it hyperthermia?

Tara is about 70lbs, she was fine. Tara only broke ice on 2 retrieves. We didn’t go out till about noon every day when it warmed up.

Yeah we were hunting from the bank. She’s been fine as can be.

As to being hypothermic I can’t say for sure. That’s my guess though.

I said hyperthermia (too hot), you got it right, hypothermia (too cold). I’m thinking your dog was just exhausted as you said, breaking that ice on every retriever. If your dog got hypothermia, don’t think she would have snapped out of it like she did, the seizure throws me, I would talk to you vet about that. That retrieve on that video I sent Tara, I was actually going to make that retrieve myself, she knew what I was thinking, she jumped down and started going crazy, I said ok, and sent her reluctantly. I was worried about her cutting herself on that ice. I was trying to pick my shots where they landed in the deeks.

Thanks for sharing that story, I good reminder we need to always be watching and reading our dog.
