Golden Child, the oldest, never really got into hunting. She shot some, but not much. Married a really good guy, but he is not a hunter. My oldest grandchild is lil' Hud. They really want him to get in on firearms and such. Being six, it was time to take him to the lease and get him going. Brought out the Red Ryder that his mom learned to shoot on. He is a big kid for six, but the gun was a a little big on him. Didn't matter. After a little instruction and some hyper emphasis on three rules, he was all in and took to it pretty well. SIL was happy I wanted him to take the BB gun so he could practice in the backyard.

cheers Off to a good start. up I finally bought myself the adult Red Ryder. 'Box says "We all had one." I didn't. frown I did have the all-brass Benjamin pellet rifle you have to pump 15+ times to do anything. Definitely develops your muscles. Still have it.) I'm busy scaring English Sparrows.

I'm gonna try to get my 11-year-old grandson behind the .243 in a few weeks. I gotta go real easy and calm. He can shoot a basketball, in front of a crowd of people, really well, but he gets extremely frustrated when the bullseye on a target doesn't immediately have a hole through it; way too much like his daddy. His daddy makes me look down-right well-adjusted.

Good times is right! BB gun to a.22lr later is such a great path for teaching the fundamentals. I bought a Heritage Rough Rider .22 specifically because it is SA and has a manual safety for teaching my grandkids.

Great pictures!

Well done grandpa!

Question: Does SIL not want to learn to shoot?

SIL can shoot (not proficiently) and enjoys the outdoors. Just never been exposed to hunting. Working on that. It's a "slow play".

Rules he memorized and in order -

Never point a firearm at yourself or anyone else

Always pay attention when a firearm is in your hands or in the immediate vicinity

Treat every firearm as if it is loaded

Had a gun safety VHS tape we got from NRA years ago that I had my son watch, til the rules were burned into his brain. Eddie Eagle was the main character.

Very nice!

I tried yesterday and mine still won’t make the reach for full size rifle length of pull at 8. I bought an AR for the adjustable stock it has served well. My wife and I can shoulder and shoot it all the way down to my 5 year old with help.

He'll learn from the ground up- he'll be helping with the cleaning before he is shooting any deer. Btw, he'll start on rabbits.

Next year, Savage Rascal. After he burns through 1,000 rounds, put a scope on it. Something happens to a kid when they spin a target at 50 yards or so, they can't reload fast enough. We had a day at our lease, rainy, kinda cool. I sat between my grandson and another kid and passed out ammo for a couple of hours. They get good quick and once they get behind a Model 60 or a 10-22 1,000 rounds is a weekend.

Awesome!

Can't wait for those times. My son sat with me this past weekend due to the cold (in a blind and not in a treestand) and he shot a doe. Been a while since we got to hunt together, so its the memories that make the difference. I secretly think he enjoys the company too.

Eventually, it will be grandkinds, but not yet.

When my oldest son was six I bought him a Daisy. We lived in the country. If he broke the main rules, don't point it at anybody, safety on, and uncocked in the house, I'd take it and put it on top of the fridge where he could see it. It drove him crazy being able to see it but not touch it. I'd leave it there a couple of days. He learned to handle a gun safely. Now at the job he has he teaches others gun safety.

I take all my grandkids hunting, the boys and the girls.
I don’t think there’s anything better to keep kids out of trouble than hunting, I know it worked for me.
I wasn’t about to get into any trouble and miss any hunting, plus daddy would beat my @$$.
Keep up the good work.
