With this prolonged cold-spell, don't forget to feed and water the wildlife/songbirds!!

The ground is frozen hard as rock here, and of course all liquid water frozen.
We've been putting out extra seed - and also mealworms for the bluebirds - and keeping liquid water close-by too.
Our place is covered-up in Cardinals and bluebirds - doing every bit we can to help them survive.

Feeding but need to put some water out. Lost a male cardinal during the big freeze. Threw some milo on my back patio yesterday. Cat likes to lay by SGD and watch the birds.

We have bird seed in many feeders, and the Chickadees are going at it hard. Not as many Cardinals as usual.

Wife brought the hummingbird feeder in as it was frozen solid. I put bird seed in a hanging basket on the porch for all the others. They drink from the waterfall at the pool.

They didn’t hit the bird feeder as much as they normally do during a cold spell. There’s still a lot for them to eat on the ranch.

I have two feeders , they are getting lots of attention. have a bumper crop of cardinals , as many as 5 males at once.
We don't seem to have as much variety as in years past. There is a lake in the back yard , so water is not an issue.

They seem to like deer corn. The big crows crack them. The medium size birds break them down even further and then the little sparrows eat the smallest pieces. They work together.

My pool is not frozen, plenty of water there. I should go get some seed. Thanks for reminding me.

I buy a 50lb bag of milo at the feed store. Costs less then birdseed and birds really like it.

I have a scarlet tanager at my place in Mills county. I had no idea they would winter this far north. I don't know what the attraction is but he loves my place. I see him around the headquarters almost every weekend I'm there.

^ I run thru about 100# of chicken scratch per month mixed-in with corn on 2 feeders I have here on the property. The birds eat good here.

We've started (last year) putting out mealworms under the feeders by the house for the poor little bluebirds who prefer those over seeds.

Thanks, I'll have to try that. I used to put out bird seed, but it was messy and costly. The corn is for the deer, but the birds were desperate, I guess

Is Milo like the millet sticks you give to pet birds? What is it called at the feed store in big bags?

During the freeze of 2021 we had some bluebirds show up. Never seen one before that and haven't seen once since. I do have a pair of Cardinals that next in one of my Crepe Myrtles just about every year.

"Look at the birds!
They don’t worry about what to eat—they don’t need to sow or reap or store up food—for your heavenly Father feeds them.
And you are far more valuable to him than they are. Will all your worries add a single moment to your life?"
