I’m looking to see if any members are plumbers or you guys have any recommendations for a plumber. Have a 1950’s pier and beam home that’s getting to end of life on the gas line. Looking for full replacement. It’s very basic - no line underground, all in crawl space. Line goes through brick, never underground. Services my WH & furnace in one location, and tees in to the stove midway through. It is basically one straight line. Seems like a basic job.

Let me know if you or anyone you have used would be a good fit.

Many thanks.

Normally the gas line only rust through in spots where it is in dirt. Anywhere else and it lasts as long as the house. There really isn't a finite lifespan of a gas line in areas where it is dry. Why do you believe it needs to be replaced?

There are a lot of connections and terminations from additions and remodels. The connections require pipe dope / tape. Steel pipe is outlasting the pipe dope. I’m at the point where we had a repair and with the wonderful city of Dallas pressure test new leaks have developed at the connections. It cost more to repair connections than a new gas line.

As crazy as it sounds pipe dope or tapes isn't what seals up a gas line. Gas lines have NTPT which is an acronym for national tapered pipe thread. They seal by metal to metal contact. Dope or tape is really only there to reduce the amount of friction as you are screwing stuff together and sealing is secondary. The typical gas pressure in older homes tops out at 10.5" of water column which is about 1/3rd of a psi. A few hours of crawling under the house with a pair of pipe wrenches will save you about 5k. The quality of the gas lines and fittings in older homes is really, really high when compared to what you can buy today since I can't think of a US manufacturer of black pipe and fittings. Today it is all chinese made crap.

Thanks for this. I came to that conclusion myself after a quote. Not very hard to cut off all these terminations and plug. Appreciate the advice.

Almost impossible if not impossible to find US made gas lines or fitting anymore, been that way for last ten year.

US made had thicker wall sizes and better fittings

If the house is over 40 years old, I would just repipe it.

Now of days they make CSST gas pipe that is flexible, I am not a big fan of it, I like the old school steel lines.
