Entertaining the idea of giving NRL/PRS rimfire a try and before jumping in to something new thought I would check for advice on a rifle? Was thinking production class rifle for now, but will be open to others for the right price. Not looking to break the bank, but willing to pay fair priced for the right setup. TIA

If you're wanting to do production class a factory CZ, Tikka, Bergara, Ruger RPR (in that order) with an Arken EP-5 on it will be a winner for you.

If you want to just spend tons of money you can always go RimX, Vudoo, or complete custom rifle. Then top it with really expensive glass of your choice.

I personally shoot a KIDD 10/22 and shoot it out to 500 yards, I love the semi auto, I get a lot of crap from the bolt action guys. Bolt gun guys seem to think the semi-auto isn't as accurate but I was cold bore champ of the league the first year and have won many of black death up agains RimX and Vudoo guns and came in 2nd or 3rd (can't remember its been a while) the last long range match I shot against all the Alamo Precision guys with custom Bergara guns.

So I say all that to say, get what you want and don't worry about other's opinions LOL.

Springer, if you are just now jumping into it, you can attend your first match for just the cost of ammo for one match (and the entrance fee of course. You could get a look at what other guys are running and get a better idea of what you want to purchase. Senior's matches are in North Texas if you are close, this would be the ticket.

Yep, our first match of the year will be Feb 11. It is a PRS shoot but we do several different type of rimfire matches including long range (out to 500 yards) and TYL (Test Your Limits) matches.

You can take a look at our website for more information on the matches.

cant get much better advise than this. you will also hear about testing different ammo. .22's can be picky. Go on You Tube, look up "Pursuit Of Accuracy" and "Cyclops". You will get all the brain overload you can absorb from these two guys. Cyclops is funny too.

Pretty good advice. Some of the CZ will have match grade

If you intend to stretch it out to 400 or so you will need a 30-40 moa pic base

Forgot about that I run a 50MOA rail and run out of travel around 475 and have to hold the rest in the reticle.

I run a Bergara B-14r with an Arken EP5 as my PRS22 rifle. Shooting it head to head with my buddy's vudoo, it's maybe .1 MOA less accurate. Noticeable, but not enough to make a differenc.

But I'm really, really happy with it. And the compatibility with Rem700 accessories like triggers and chassis means that there are plenty of secondhand parts that you could hypothetically pick up if you wanted to start swapping things around.

I second the Bergara B14R. Mine is topped with a Bushnell Match Pro and I have run with the expensive guns at our match. We o ly go out to 200yds though. Mine likes Norma Tac22, so my ammo isn't too expensive either.

Vudoo is a refined piece of art work, the bolt lift is excellent the flow of the action is slick as ice. It’s pretty perfect and you can build it any way you want it. The B14r comes close but has a clunky bolt lift, accuracy wise is very close almost immeasurable if you take the time to select the proper ammo.

I had a kidd rifle and it shot exceptional, however it seemed like it fell apart starting at 100-150 and when you got to 200 was pretty much its limit. I will say that I shot premium ammo but didn’t lot test like I did for the vudoo.

Budget and what you want is your only limitations.

Personally I like the size of the magazines and full size and heft of the 700 clones.

So, how do you guys go about finding ammo that your gun likes. I am just starting down that road with my Tikka and am honestly overwhelmed with the amount of .22 LR “match” ammo on the market. Shot some Wolf Match Extra that did OK, but would like to explore other options.

I just buy several 50 round boxes of all kinds of ammo then shoot several 10 round groups from each box then go with whatever the best overall grouping. Then I buy a case directly from manufacturer. Mine loves SK Long Range but also shot great with SK Rifle Match but hated all the lapua ammo. Which I was happy because because SK is much cheaper than anything Lapua.

I am blown away the idea of 22LR at those distances. Where can I learn more?

Lot testing. Google it….very inexpensive way to find what’s best for your gun.

Man, I think lot testing really only matters if you're going for benchrest accuracy. For PRS/NRL22 anything that'll put down a cloverleaf hole at 50 yards is good enough. And that's actually easier to come by with a good gun than you'd think.

I picked ammo by picking up one box of eley, one box of Lapua center X, and one box of SK Rifle match. I shot all three at the range, realized they grouped about the same. The eley was hard to chamber, and Lapua is expensive, so the SK Rifle match is what I shoot.

Something to consider when testing ammo according to a very serious .22 target shooter I knew in New Mexico is that the various bullet alloys and coatings vary among the brands and even within brands. These can affect the barrel surface. My expert tells me he will shoot 10-20 rounds of a new brand to "dress the bore" with its coatings and alloy before settling down to test it for accuracy. This of course complicates the testing if there is any truth in it. I would defer to the more experienced here and look forward to their comments as to whether this is theory or fact.

I’m curious if a stock Ruger 10/22 competition would compete at all? The integrated 30 moa rail would limit the distance, but I would be happy shooting out to 200ish. I picked it up here on THF and have only had a couple of range trips. Not having any higher end ammo it seemed to shoot better than me. Maybe it’s time to get it on some bags or a rest to see what it can actually do. Here’s the screen shot from Ruger’s website.
