Everything else being equal, is it better to have two years newer or 30k less miles?

Assuming that both trucks really are 'everything else being equal' (similar usage, type of driving, maintenance, etc) I'd go with the 2016 - it's only two years apart from the 2018. Both trucks have already depreciated substantially, and an extra 30k miles is that much more wear and tear on things that you'll have to repair or replace at some point.

Not trying to pee on your parade, but myself and two other guys at work all had GMCs of that generation. My ‘16 ate three transmissions by 150,000 miles, a/c issues, and lost a wheel hub. The other two were on their 2nd transmission between 80 and 100,000 miles with one guy also having broken a hub. I’d opt for extra warranty at least. Just real world experience with those make/models. I know GM built a lot more than three trucks over that time period and I’m sure there are good experiences to be had with them.

Guys like you were the exception on no service records. If they had the information and were willing to pass it onto me I always gave more money on the trade in as I knew my prep for sale charges would be very low. Most of the time your type were easy to work with as they knew what they had and had all the information they needed on the purchase of the vehicle they wanted. With the off the street, word of mouth folks, I was working with the owners money so I had to be wary on these vehicles. Almost all of the 100k miles cars went straight to the auction or wholesalers.

Paid for a carfax. Really good.service records but 3 previous owners. 1st owner 25k miles, 2nd owner 40k miles and current owner the remaining 60k miles. Regular oil changes, transmission services at 100k miles. It does show the vacuum pump was replaced at 100k miles.

I bought a truck that carfax said had no accidents and found body work. I also sold a vehicle that carfax said had no body work which had been in the body shop 2 times personally. I knew the dealer I traded at personally and told him so and he shrugged his shoulders and said I don’t know about it.

In theory carfax is great, but it’s only as good as the BS info it’s fed.

This 100%. Carfax is ok to check previous owners, but aside from that take it with a grain of salt.
Hell my old Tesla was essentially totaled by the porter the day I traded it in at the GMC dealer. It was sold a month later by said dealer with zero damage listed on on CarFax.

Those are pretty close….

If one has had one versus multiple owners.

All things equal I’d take the newer one with that close of miles…

In general I like to find an older vehicle, something around 5 years old with one owner with under 50k miles…those are the best bang for your buck.

My current truck is a 2018 F150 that only had 30k miles when I bought it…

If you're just traveling around Lindale (close to home) you "should" be safe on either one. Not sure I would take either on a road trip.

Good luck with your search. Keep us posted.

Cam failures are much more rare than the internet says ... worst case is a lifter for this era. If you want GM, you're getting AFM in a half ton V8. Have it turned off by a tuner if you'd like. Approx cost is $500. Carfax only shows collision damage repaired by insurance claim or done at a shop that reports customer pay (most shops don't report cash repairs to Carfax). 130K miles is VERY low for a 2018 around here. Most locals would trade every other year if they were scared of 100K miles. I finished a repair on a 2021 3500 yesterday with 127K. I have a 2007 with 184K miles and over 10K hours... I'd drive it anywhere. My wife's 2003 she's had for 16 years has almost 190K and doesn't worry me a bit.

Pass the gravy.
