It's time to change mine too. A few of those plugs are hard to get to. I'm trying to decide whether or not to DIY it or have someone do it. The OEM plugs are $16.50 each from Mopar. Ouch.

OEM plugs are the best way. I run 15w40 rotella and have since 125kish and it has worked out nicely. 5w30 mobile 1 up until then.

Use the factory plugs. They did an incredible amount of research to decide what to use. Don't run thick oil in a modern Hemi.

Or any modern engine. Those oil passages are small.

What is considered a modern engine?

Just run the oil and plugs that manufacturer recommends. The only time I have deviated from this was on a 2001 Ford 5.4. It used a quart of oil every 1200 to 1500 from day 1. A little heavier oil seemed to help some.

The oil galleries in a Hemi are relatively large. The problem is caused by the crankshaft driven oil pump. Since it is not submerged in oil there's sometimes a bit of a delay in it priming up and it is extremely sensitive to suction restrictions or suction leaks. This isn't unique to the Hemi and every engine with a crankshaft driven oil pump has the same potential problem. Thinner oil is easier to get moving and the clearances in the bearings and inside of the hydraulic lifters were designed around thin oil.

OEM plugs unless modified.
I don't follow the OEM oil idea any more as 0W20 has become the new norm...not because it's better but because it improved the CAFE 0.00005% or something. I don't have anything new enough to "require" 0W20 but I would not use it if I did. I'd likely go with 5W30. A new V8 Camaro calls for 0W40. No thanks.

Pass the gravy.

Ford 4.6l engines called for 5w20 nearly 30 years ago and people who thought that they knew more than the engineers who designed the engine and used thicker oil spun rod bearing, and seized the camshafts in the cylinder head. 0w20 and 5w20 provide the same quality of lubrication. The downside to the thinner oil is that they have low viscosity to begin with and if you use it too long and have viscosity breakdown you're going to wear the engine severely. On my Hemis I change the oil every 3500 miles using Liqui Moly new generation oil along with a molly additive from the same company.

The 0 weight oils are used so you get the oil moving through the engine faster after the initial startup. On engines with a front mounted crankshaft driven oil pump that is above the oil level in the sump it is critical that you use the recommended oil weight.

Just changed my oil MYSELF for the first time..do not trust walmart anymore..decided to go with mobil1 synthetic 5w20..and a mobile 1 filter..well no more of the tic tic tic associated with 5.7 hemi..A pleasant surprise..it's a 2013 ram that I get 13-14 mpg without pullimg anything..and when i.pull a 26' trailer..gas mileage is terrible..8mpg around town..4-5mpg in the mountains of northern new mexico..uggh! Changing of the oil.and.oil filter did improve mpg around town about 1.5 mpg..Negligible I know..but.every little bit helps..I'm going with the platinum OEM..hopefull.thay will improve mpg.another thing..plugs were 150$ for 16 plugs..2 per cylinder!

Just not a fan of new vehicles too much durability and longevity is sacrificed on insignificant gains in economy and emission.

Yup - it's an ouch on plugs for this engine! Whadda they think, it's an airplane ??

run the best oil and filter you can get (you did good) and don't go a hare over 5k miles - on this engine).
I'd personally do 3k if you're pulling trailer all the time.

I'm saving up $3000 to get roller-lifters-(failed) and cam replaced on a truck w/ this engine with 174k miles (hand-me-down from my uncle, free).
A damn shame cause this thing was a real sugar-plum till the 'hemi-tick' bad lifters killed the cam.
He even had a dealer service plan on the truck till 150k miles, and baby'd it (never pulled a trailer or had a load).

What do you define as 'new'? Honestly, vehicles these days are pretty impressive. I rarely see anybody broken down by the side of the road any more. Last one was an F150 Ecoboost that the head gasket let loose on about four years ago.

We tend to drive vehicles a long time. Knock on wood I haven't been stranded or had a major repair in years. Some of our vehicles:

2001 Honda minivan, 268k, hit a deer and punched the radiator or it might still be running.
2009 Honda minivan, 212k, running fine when traded
2013 F150, 105k, so far only a water pump.
2012 Honda Ridgeline, 196k, so far only an alternator
2008 Honda Ridgeline, 123k, t-boned/totalled by a redlight runner, no issues beforehand
2001 Explorer SportTrac, new tranny at 140k, then traded. Did have a 4wd motor ($400) go bad and a couple of other ~$500 repairs.
1995 F250, 351W, had to have a long block at 140k, and did the clutch/pressure plate while in there. Truck has 295k but is rusting out now and ready for the recycler.

What upgrades can I make to upgrade the gas mileage..a new cam?..different gear ratio in the rear end..I use this truck as an everyday driver..only about 10000 miles a year...I know the rams will never get as good of gas mileage as it did brand new..buy any upgrades that would help? One guy..a Ford guy told me to "take the radiator cap off and drive another truck under the cap.."lol

Does midgrade fuel make any difference in mpg in the 5.7 hemi?
