I want to run something by you fellas. I have an 80 acre field that's planted in wheat right now and is being grazed by cattle. Typically with decent rains, good sunflowers come up in the Spring. I'm thinking about doing a partial season dove lease on it next year, if the sunflowers do ok. The field is 8/10ths of a mile long and has a creek that runs all down the east side. Great shade trees all around it and of course, strips will be mowed. It is usually turned mid October and wheat is planted again.
The lease would be from September 1st to October 20th. I'm thinking a total of 22 lease hunters for the field (it will easily hold 35). $350 per person and only the lease person can hunt at that price, the lease hunter is allowed to bring one guest for an additional $50 per day.

I'm not trying to lease anything now, that depends on sunflowers. I just wanted to get your thoughts on it. Some folks may ask about kids hunting free. I won't do that because I've tried that a couple of times in the past and that privilege has gotten abused. So basically, no free hunting.

So, what's your thoughts, sound pretty fair?

It’s too bad you try and do something nice and they abuse it. If I were to do it, I would say kid can hunt for free, but 1) you must sit together and 2) only 1 limit of birds.

I guess I did leave that out. $350 per person.

That could possibly work.

Glad there's some interest. If the sunflowers do well, I'll want folks to come look if they can, before they pay. I've been doing day hunts on it the past 3 years. But day hunts take up a lot of my time, especially when this field is down the road a little ways. It's a lot easier to do day hunts on my fields.

Pray for good rains and hopefully well have good sunflowers. I will say, dove numbers are great right now. I sat at one deer feeder this weekend that easily had 60 dove on it. Another feeder I sat at on another ranch I counted 26 at it. Lots of birds around to make babies.

I’d be out on a season dove lease if I had to pay $100 every time to bring my kids.

I might be able to work something out like Guy mentioned, for kids 12 and under. We'll see when the time comes.

If this is that place we hunted before and the sunflowers do good, I'd sure be interested and probably (won't promise) some others in my group.

I like the idea....especially the part where you said you'd wait to see how the sunflowers did before you took anyone's money!

Same field you and Chris hunted, where the gate is at the end of the bridge.

I don't believe I will. I'm about to turn my dove fields just as soon as I can after this next rain event. Not many birds in the fields, they're mostly packed around all the deer feeders.

Are you putting wheat into the ground when you turn them over this far into December?

No wheat, just discing and dragging for sunflowers. The sunflowers start popping up about mid March.

I would have interest. For the past two years I've tried to BIL my way into something similar that a group has every year near Midland. Run out of spots by the time my ticket # is called.

I would be interested in a lease, as long as my health recovers.

I may have missed it, but any restriction on how frequently the lease gets hunted?

My concern would be someone with unrestricted access hunting it every 3 days just because they can.

Not sure how I would be able to restrict it with it being a lease. But being 2 hours from the metroplex should even things out. Plus, I'm not loading it up with hunters. It would take every lease hunter with one guest to fill the field, it's 8/10ths of a mile long.

I'm interested if I'm still in Texas.
