My son, Noah, got drawn for a TYHP youth duck hunt this past weekend in Waller County. It was the first time either of us had been on a duck hunt or in a duck blind. We had a great time and he is hooked. They spent time shooting skeet in the afternoons. He was able to shoot some green and blue wingteal and two pintail over the two days of hunting. He also dusted the tailfeathers of a snow goose that never really came in, but was nosy and got a little too close so the guide called the shot. It was awesome to watch the dogs work and to see the birds come pouring into the decoys.

We don’t really have a good duck gun (I have a Remi 870 pump) so my good friend loaned Noah his for the weekend. Since our return he’s been window shopping for a shotgun, decoys, calls, etc. He has quickly found a Baretta A300 in Bottomland camo with bronze ceracote that he really likes. The guide said the quickest way to become a millionaire is to first become a billionaire, then start duck hunting. I can see how this is true. This is definitely something that we are going to pursue as its just so different from any type of hunting we have ever done.

He is eager to get back out there after them so we are scouring the map for some public spots to hit.

Congrats. I remember when I got my first duck gun. It was a Remington semi-auto. Had issues with it cycling so we took it back and traded it for an 870. I still have that gun but I don't shoot it any more. I need to get a new barrel that will shoot steel and has screw in chokes.

He'll remember this as well. It's a shotgun now. A dozen dozen field decoys in case you go up north to hunt geese...When you've bought the duck boat, you'll know you hit bottom.

No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

Duck hunting addiction is a real thing. Since my sons first duck hunt last month, he’s been consumed by it. He and some of his buddies have gone to Anahuac NWR several times to hunt. They’ve come home empty handed each time but he says they have fun regardless. He’s constantly on Facebook marketplace looking for decoys, a sled, a dog, etc.

He’s a senior in high school and had several football scholarship offers but an injury ended his career early so he’s shifted his focus to other things. His outlet has been hunting and fishing. Not a bad trade off and a lot easier on the body.

He is a straight A student, takes care of his business, and isn’t a ****. He had been eyeballing that shotgun for a few weeks online, so his mom and I decided to surprise him with an early graduation present.. He was stoked!
