Made one in woodshop in 1964 or maybe 1963 for my Mom. I got back into woodworking in about 1980 or so and started acquiring woodworking ‘stuff’, and made simple things. Still turning bowls, since the demand from the family is high. Just finished the one below, and I just put the first coat of finish on another one. Christmas gifts.

And since some the grandkids are either newly married or almost there, and babies will start turning up, the next wood turning job is baby rattles. Five of them ought to be enough for now and the next couple of years.

And, for meanness I’ll make a few whistles for the neighbor’s grandkids, with instruction to not give them the whistles till they are back home with their Dad - of whom I am not fond. Over the years I’ve made a bunch of those whistles, and I bet they’ve all been hidden or destroyed by the parents. Makes me smile though.

Very cool.
I have a new Jet lathe that I will give a workout during these cooler months. I have a bunch of blanks that need to take shape.
I turned a cool mallet from that bois d' arc blank you gave me. It is part of the shop tools now.

I’m finished with the two bowls. On to baby rattles, and I’ve finished 3 of 6. And then 3 more wooden coasters. The first one came out really nice. I used some old growth Cherry that my brother gave me 15 years ago. The coasters are actually wooden holders of ceramic coasters.

Here is the first one. Looks big, but is actually about 6” in diameter.

Thanks very much, Buzz. The bowls had one coat of Minwax Antique Oil, followed by 3 coats of Waterlox Original Satin. The coaster has Watco Danish Oil satin. When I finish all the coasters and baby rattles, I’ll post up a picture. Baby rattles only have mineral oil on them, since babies chew on stuff.
